Malaysia is facing a shortage of blood supply. Average daily medical services throughout the country require nearly 2,000 blood bags for use by 925 patients. Although the number may seem small, this might be a problem. Blood shortages at hospitals and health centres are causing unnecessary deaths, especially among children. Records show that of the 923 people who needed blood transfusions at Man hospital, 19 percent failed to receive the service, and half that number died.

Blood banks need a constant supply of donations, as red blood cells can only last a maximum of 42 days, while platelets can only be kept for five to seven days. Plasma can be frozen and if kept in the right conditions, can keep well for years. The short lifespan of some components is the reason why the blood bank is constantly in need of supply.

Also, despite a 25 percent of the population having blood type A, it often runs short in the blood bank. Red blood cells have a lifespan of about 122 days in the body, of which then they will die and be replenished. Instead of letting it go to waste, donating it can help to save lives.

National Blood Donation (NBD) is one of the large scale annual project run by undergraduates under Fifth Residential College from University of Malaya for 21 years consecutively since 1997. This project helps to raise up the concern of the public due to inadequate of blood packs in our country and hence helping to reduce the problems of inadequate blood supplies at National Blood Bank and hospitals in Malaysia.

This year, we will organize one blood donation awareness raising and fundraising run under NBD (Run 4 Lives) in order to create awareness among the students of University of Malaya and the public. We also hope through this run, we can reach out to the blood donors about our in-campus and off-campus blood donation drive which will be held in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Besides, our blood donation drive will be held in our campus and seven different states in west Malaysia including Pahang, Perak, Melaka, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Pulau Penang.

NBD is currently preparing for Blood Awareness Raising and Fundraising Run, on-campus and off-campus blood drive stations. Pursuant to that, we are in need of supports from public in ensuring our event a success. Your generous support and contribution will facilitate our organizing committees in running this event smoothly. Please support us and be with us to help and save the life.
