I'm Gia, a student from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Following my most recent mission project with Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) last year, I was overwhelmed with joy and love of Christ as I witnessed fellow missionary students proclaim God's goodness to those suffering isolation, poverty, and spiritual hunger in Mexico City.
I knew that after that mission trip, my mission here on earth has only just begun. With that, I have grown to seek opportunities where I can love and serve my brothers and sisters in Christ in ways that God allows and helps me to.
Last February, I was invited to go on a social project up north with another Catholic organization called Opus Dei. Founded by Saint Josemaria Escriva, this organization encourages ordinary individuals to do their work extraordinarily, for the greater glory of God.
Naskamoonan, which means, "We are grateful." in the Cree language, is the name of the project I will be partaking in. There, I will be traveling to a small community on Moose Factory Island located at Northern Ontario, alongside women of Opus Dei and other university students like me. Together, we aim to provide companionship to the sick and to the elderly, team building activities for the youth council, as well as character development programs and workshops to the youth.
I am participating in this project because I wish to pay forward to communities that are often overlooked and challenged by poverty, stigma, and isolation. Moreover, through this meaningful enterprise, I aspire to gain first hand knowledge and perspective on the lives of my neighbours up north.
With that, all participants are responsible for raising funds to embark on this journey scheduled from May 1st to May 12th. As well, this project is also intended to be a time for prayer, reflection, and thanksgiving, we are in need of donations to cover the cost for a priest to travel to the island by helicopter.
I ask that if you're able, to kindly consider supporting me in this project by making a donation and/or by keeping me and the rest of the participants in your prayers as this social project commences.
