National State of Emergency declared in Samoa for measles epidemic. 7 babies dead so far, 800+ people sick and growing daily. The hospitals are running out of everything, but I'm focusing on the kids and their families who are really struggling as many people are unable to work and really struggling for basics.
Food will be bought and given to the soup kitchens.
Nappies and milk powder I will distribute personally.
I'm already doing what I can, but have very limited resources. I'm immune as I had measles as a kid, so I'm able to get around with no issues.
Todays dropoff is courtesy of Clare and Lene Leota from Siva Afi Entertainment, they're gearing up to go to Savaii where they're building and donating beds for one of the hospitals which has no room left. Pretty cool that they still dug deep to help my small efforts.
I still got cash left from the last 2 donations, I'll probably use it on milk formula. But no time left today.
Soup kitchens drops today courtesy of my good friend Carmel Moore. enough sausages and mince there for some big pots :-) Got to be impressed when people who are right in the middle of it still dig deep and help out.
Only got through half of her contribution before I ran out of time and did my milk runs. So will use the rest tomorrow. My normal supermarket run out of sacks of potatoes.... partially because of us... but have promised to restock tomorrow morning from their head office.
I'll just be doing the milk powder and nappy runs for a couple of days. Everything is being closed down. I've dropped off enough to those outside walking distance to keep them going for a couple of days. So all good.
For non Samoan speakers we're basically shutting the country down except for essential services for 2 days. My understanding is no driving, no shops and all non essential govt services.
UK is sending a medical team so that's great News, this is the resource we need most I reckon. NZ team has been here for a while working hard. UK team
Strange clinics have popped up and are treating people with all sorts of weird remedies like boiling water, holy oil and Kangen water for a price. This chap has been ordered to close down but no idea if he has. Seems unlikely.
There's still huge resistance to vaccination and lots of people preaching against it. Hopefully something can be actually enforced against them.
Got paid, so this ones on me. The best news is that there has been only one death in the last 48 hours that I know about, so hopefully this epidemic has peaked. One of the soup kitchens has too much food in storage (great problem to have) so I'm just …
