Naomi’s Adventure to Merida, Mexico

Hello Everyone!!

This summer I am spending 8 weeks in Merida, Mexico as a volunteer working with people with special needs. I will be working alongside staff, assisting with physical therapy, arts and crafts, preparing food, and creating a safe, welcoming environment for those in our care. I worked at a camp for people with special needs in the past and enjoyed growing and learning from this population of people so I am very excited to be doing it again. I hope to bring enthusiasm and support for the people I work with over the summer, but I know they are going to change my life in more ways than I can anticipate.

Merida, Mexico is the capital of the state of Yucatan located on the Caribbean Coast. I will be there during the rainy season, although the highs will still be over 90 degrees Fahrenheit! I want to volunteer in Mexico because I am eager to learn about Mexican culture from food to music to customs, and I hope to improve my Spanish by getting an authentic experience speaking with the locals.

I am more than excited for this adventure: to meet volunteers from around the world, to experience Mexican culture, and to work with people with special needs. I know I will grow from this trip and can not wait to see what I learn from the journey. Muchas gracias!
