I would like to share with you how my mother is bravely fighting for her life.
Last May 8, 2018, my mother, Cynthia Lazarte-Rubiano, 61 years old, undergone total thyroidectomy or a surgery which tends to remove her thyroid due to a cancerous tumor found at the right side of her neck. The said tumor was diagnosed as Metastatic Follicular Carcinoma with dediffrentiated Anaplastic Carcinoma (Thyroid Cancer) upon biopsy. After her two-week recovery from the said operation, we consulted her endocrinologist for post-surgical treatment. The plan is she going through Radioactive Iodine Treatment (RAI). Ultrasound and Thyroid Blood Test was done to check if traces of cancerous tumors were still present in lymph nodes in her neck. Results show that her neck is clear and she is ready to undergo Radioactive Iodine Treatment (RAI).
However, as my mother is preparing for RAI, a new lump developed to her right neck again. Our family consulted her ENT doctor and referred us to a new doctor which specializes in head and neck tumors. He requested for a CT scan and surgical biopsy to determine if the said lump is a recurrence of the thyroid cancer or if it is a new cancer. The biopsy result shows that the tumor is a poorly differentiated malignancy and Immuno Histo Chemistry test was done to identify the type of cancer further. It took a month for the results to be obtained. While we wait for its result, the lump in her neck is rapidly growing as noticed. With the result, it was diagnosed as Malignant Neoplasm - Extraskeletal Oteosarcoma. It is a very rare sub-type of sarcoma, which high-grade malignant soft tissue neoplasm and has a clinically aggressive course.
Our family admitted our Nanay at Philippine General Hospital (PGH) last August 24, 2018 since she is suffering due to the weight of her tumor which developed from her neck up to her jaw. She is experiencing difficulty in eating and when she is coughing, it is followed by vomiting.
A team of doctors in PGH has performed a tracheostomy since the said tumor is invading her windpipe and it gives her difficulty in breathing. Alongside, she has undergone percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement in her stomach in order for her to have enough supply of food and nutrients to prepare her on chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The two procedures were done last Thursday, August 30, 2018. Nanay is still in the hospital to monitor her breathing through the tube and recovering from the two surgeries.
The family has been exhausted financially from her previous treatments and a series of laboratory tests. The two procedures (tracheostomy, PEG), including doctor's professional fee, laboratory tests, medicines, medical supplies and hospitalization will cost more than half a million pesos (Php 700,000.00). The current procedures are still far from the actual treatment that would follow such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
I would like to take this opportunity to ask for help for my mother. To raise funds for her, we’ve created this gogetfunding post. Our family is knocking on your generous hearts to support us. Any amount that you can donate to help finance for her would be a big help. We would also be grateful it if you share this post with others who can contribute financially, or support us by spreading this post. With all your help and support, it is the Lord who will bless you with so much more.
Above all, our family also asks everyone to keep my mother in your prayers for the success of her operations and treatments as well as her speedy recovery.
