We run a trekking business in North Sumatra at Bukit Lawang. The village of Bukit Lawang and surrounding areas rely on tourism for their livelihoods as it lies along the precious Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the last true edens in the world and home to many endangered animals including orangutans and gibbons.
With Covid-19, tourism is shut down and the people are struggling to get by each day.
The result is the majority of residents have no job, no income and no savings.
There is not enough government assistance and residents must either survive off of food they may be able to harvest from gardens or rely on the generosity of friends and strangers.
Things are beginning to get dire for many of the residents as food stocks at home dwindle and no income to replenish.
We are asking for help from those who may have visited this area, who love this part of the world and the people here, who understand the difficulty here for the people here who live very simple lives and do not have support or buffers to assist through a crisis such as Covid-19, causing both health and economic concerns.
With every dollar, our staff will be able to buy food in larger bulk orders making every dollar go even further.
Every dollar helps! If you have anything to give, it will be received gratefully and used for those families most in need.
