Campaign Story
May Kathleen is a single mom who was diagnosed with a rare type of lung cancer - adenosquamous carcinoma of the right lung, stage IIIB.
May has always lived a healthy lifestyle, never smoked, and so this disease came as a bit of a shock. What she and her doctor initially thought to be a jaw/mouth problem turned out to be caused by something more sinister -- a large vein (Superior Vena Cava) that transports blood from the head, neck and upper extremities to the heart, is blocked/compressed. This caused the swelling in her face and severe headaches. It wasn't long before the doctors detected the lung cancer. To make matters worse, her biopsy sample tested EGFR mutation negative, meaning, she is not eligible for EGFR-targeted drugs because the cancer did not respond to the drug the hospital tested.
With God's grace, she completed a radiation therapy treatment in January, and underwent one cycle of chemotherapy. She could not complete the other two recommended chemotherapy cycles because of her body's adverse reaction to the drug. Medical expenses have exhausted her family’s finances.
Doctors said her only possible chance is immunotherapy drugs and targeted therapies, treatment that is not available in the Philippines. She wants to seek treatment in the US and stay alive for her daughter’s sake. This is one fight that she is determined to win. With a quivering and hoarse voice, she told me , “ I can feel my body getting weaker that’s why I want to go to the US as soon as possible before I get too weak to travel. I am more worried about my daughter now.”
We appeal to your kind heart and generosity. Any amount is most welcome. We have to act fast before the cancer overtakes her will to live. We also ask to include her in your prayers for the cancer to be completely eradicated. WE thank you in advance for being a blessing to May Kathleen. God bless you all.
