My Up With People semester

Hello! My name is Linnea. I'm 18 and I live in Stockholm, Sweden.

I am studying my senior year at Viktor Rydberg gymnasium and I am planning to travel with the organisation Up With People this summer. Up With People is a nonprofit organisation that is putting together a cast of a hundred young people from all over the world. The cast will travel the world, do community services and perform a professional show. Each week you will visit a new city or a new country and live with hostfamilies. This really allows you to experience different cultures and will give you friends for a life time. In the end of the week the cast performs a show to inspire people to make the world a better place.

I am studying art performance and my main instrument is piano. Music has always been a big part of my life and because of my involvement in several christian churches I have been able to play a lot at services. Right now I am also a part of the band in a production of the musical West Side Story, which is huge opportunity! Another passion of mine is volunteer working and I have been engaged as a volunteer at UNICEF for almost two years. It is something I love to do and something that I feel is truly important.

I have always known that I want to travel and continue with volunteering after my graduation. When I first heard about Up With People I knew it was something for me. To be able to combine traveling and volunteering with music is amazing! In addition, I will also many new friends and to get to know families all over the world is a wonderful opportunity!

The previous cast was in my hometown during my fall break and my family was able to host two wonderful girls. I also got the chance to join the cast the entire week which made me fall in love with the organization even more. I really long for my participation in something this great.

I have been doing everything I can to afford a semester with Up With People since I got accepted in April. The fee is 17000 USD which is a huge cost. I have chosen to rely on scholarships and since I do not know how much money I will get from scholarships I have done three full course exams in school. This gives me more time to work and to earn money for my semester. I worked the entire summer and when I got back to school I got a job at a local grocery store. Right now I am working as much as I possibly can and trying to balance it with my schoolwork, which I find very important.

Despite this I still have a long way to go . Therefor, I would be incredibly thankful if you would like to support my journey. I believe that everyone can make a difference in the world and I would love to inspire other young people to do the same.

Just nu pluggar jag sista året på Viktor Rydberg gymnasium och planerar att till sommaren resa med organisationen Up With People. Up With People är en ideell organisation som varje termin sätter ihop en cast på hundra ungdomar från hela världen. Tillsammans reser man runt i världen för att volontärarbeta och uppträda med en professionell show. Varje vecka besöker man en ny stad eller ett nytt land för att där bo hos värdfamiljer. Detta gör att man verkligen får uppleva olika kulturer och får vänner för livet. I slutet av veckan uppträder casten med en show för att inspirera folk till att göra världen till en bättre plats.

Jag går musiklinjen och har piano som mitt huvudinstrument. Musik har sedan länge varit en stor del av mitt liv och mitt engagemang i flera kristna församlingar har gjort att jag fått spela mycket där. Just nu är jag även med i bandet i en uppsättning av musikalen West Side Story som kommer spelas på i Stockholm till våren, vilket är en fantastisk möjlighet! Jag har också ett stort intresse för volontärarbete och i nästan två år volontärarbetat för UNICEF. Något som jag gärna lägger min tid på och tycker är otroligt viktigt.

Efter studenten har jag alltid vetat att jag vill fortsätta med volontärarbete och samtidigt resa runt om i världen. När jag först fick höra om Up With People visste jag genast att det är något för mig. Att kunna kombinera resandet och volontärarbetet med musik är helt fantastiskt! Att dessutom få en massa nya vänner och lära känna familjer över hela världen är en otrolig möjlighet!

Under höstlovet var casten i min hemstad och min familj fick chansen att vara värdfamilj till två fantastiska tjejer. Jag fick också möjligheten att vara med casten hela veckan och jag känner nu en sådan stor kärlek till organisationen. Att få själv vara en del av något så fantastiskt är något jag verkligen längtar efter.

Jag blev antagen i april och har sedan dess gjort allt för att försöka ha råd med resandet. Avgiften för programmet är 17000 USD, vilket är en jättestor kostnad. Jag har valt att förlita mig på stipendier men eftersom jag ännu inte vet hur mycket jag kan få från stipendier har jag gjort tre helkurstentor. Detta för att få mer tid till att arbeta och tjäna ihop pengar. Jag jobbade hela sommaren och när jag började skolan fick jag jobb på ICA. Där jobbar jag just nu så mycket jag bara kan och försöker samtidigt att balansera det med mitt skolarbete, vilket jag tycker är jätteviktigt.

Trots detta kommer jag fortfarande ha en bit kvar. Därför skulle jag vara otroligt tacksam om du har möjligheten att stötta mig i mitt livs resa. Jag tror på att alla kan göra skillnad i världen och jag vill jättegärna vara med och inspirera andra unga människor till att försöka sprida mer glädje.
