My Olympic Dream

Hi! I am Nathaniel Perez, a member of the Philippine Fencing team. I started fencing March 31, 2007. It was not really my favorite sport back then but the first time I tried it, I fell in love so easily. I became a member of the Philippine Fencing team in 2012. Through fencing, I was able to finish my college because I got a scholarship. And also through fencing, I was able to provide for my family and became the breadwinner. We came from a financially marginalized family. Fencing is the reason why our lives are better now.

Olympics has been my greatest dream. I am really hoping that one day, I am going to that biggest sporting event and represent my beloved country. Not all athletes can qualify in this, only the best of the best. In the history of Olympics, no Filipino yet has gotten a gold medal in any sport. That just means one thing, the support of the government is not enough. Athletes need to have what they need to be able to perform. But the sad truth, they cannot provide it all.

I am a really goal-oriented person and I am the type of person that does not stop until I get what I dreamed of. For me to qualify in the Olympics, I have to join several international fencing competitions and earn points. These competitions should be recognized by the International Fencing Federation.

I believe that if I will be given the opportunity to compete in many international competitions, I will me much better. Here’s the competitions in the 2018-2019 fencing season.

5. Cairo World Cup - Egypt - Mar 1-3, 2019
6. California Gran Prix - USA - Mar 15-17, 2019
7. St. Petersburg World Cup - Russia - May 3-5, 2019
8. Shanghai Gran Prix - China - May 17-19, 2019
