Who Jackie Is

I have four sisters--Caitlin, Megan, Jackie, and Allison. We were all fortunate enough to be raised by two very loving and supportive parents. They instilled in us all the drive and motivation to be all that we could be, and as such we have all strived to be the best people we can. Our parents led by example, and constantly guided us down the right path.

Jackie is the second youngest and is finishing her Freshman year in college. She is a compassionate, caring, loving, young woman who makes everyone in our family proud everyday. Her main ambition in life is to teach special education, specifically to work with autistic children and their families. She brings light to any situation and is extremely hard working.

The Situation

My parents own and operate their own business. It is a small paint and coating manufacturing company that was hit very hard by the recession. Right before the economy took a turn for the worst, my Dad has some trouble with a business partner, who ended up abandoning the company with little to no funds. The company has been in my family for years, and not wanting to see it fail, my parents ended up putting all of their savings into rescuing the business. Unfortunately, this happened right before the economy tanked, which only added to their hardships.

The point in telling you this is that my little sister Jackie has been left in a position where she has no money to pay for her college. She works very hard, and has all of her life. She graduated from high school in California and decided to go to the University of Oklahoma. Her dream is to help out those less fortunate than herself by teaching special education, and the Univeristy of Oklahoma has the perfect program for her. She followed her heart to that school, and that program, and has been struggling to make ends meet.

Being the hard worker she is, she was able to get into a program for her first year where she works about 20-40 hours per week in exchange for room and board. She gets no extra money on top of that. She has taken out loans for her tuition, totaling about $30,000. Because of my parents financial situation, she has been left in what I like to call the "financial aid grey area." My parents make just enough to put her in the category where she is not eligible for any grants, but they make too little to be able to pay for her college themselves. In fact, they have given her a few thousand dollars (about 5 thousand) to help her out as much as they could. In addition, my two older sisters and I send her $100 here and there when she runs out of money for food or books. However, none of us make enough to help her out consistently.

I know if they had the money my parents would pay for her college in an instant. That being said, my family has no money to help her out next year. She has been extremely stressed out with trying to figure out how she is going to afford the tuition at her school. This is because she will no longer be eligible for the program she was in this year, and will have to figure out how she is going to afford her own room and board. She is considering coming back to California and going to an academically inferior school just to be able to afford it.

Any money at all will help Jackie be able to stay at the University of Oklahoma in the program she has been dreaming of her whole academic career. She is working hard to earn the money herself, but a summer job at minimum wage just will not give her the money that she so badly needs to stay in school. I know that she will make anyone proud who believes in her!

Anything helps, and God Bless!
