MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE

We all have dreams and goals and plans to make it happen. My dream is to live Green in every way I can. My mission is to help raise Green awareness, to reduce carbon footprint and teach others about using natural resources to live healthier lifestyles.

My goal is to build and live in a Green house... specially, an Earthbag home, similar to the one in the picture. Earthbag homes are less costly, completely safe from moisture and insects, and most important --- 100% environmentally friendly. I'll collect rainwater for my water supply for my housing and garden needs, I'll use solar power for my energy, I'll use composting methods, grow my food and more green techniques. I am a serious, honest, independent hard-working person who always taken care of myself. Right now, I'm in the learning, planning and saving stage. But now I could use some help. When is this going to start happening?

Summer 2016. This means I’ve got some time to learn, plan a lot, and save the funds to make this happen.

Why do I want to go green?

There is a variety of reasons to go green, but most come back to supply and demand. We have a limited amount of resources available and more and more people using them up. If we want our future generations to enjoy the same standard of living we've experienced, we need to take action.

Green building is a great place to start, as buildings consume 14% of potable water, 40% of raw materials, and 39% of energy in the United States alone (according to the US Green Building Council). That's 15 trillion gallons of water and 3 billion tons of raw materials each year! If that's not enough to convince you, here are some other reasons to go green:

For The Environment

Want to make the world a better place? Implementing green practices into your home or office can help reduce waste, conserve natural resources, improve both air and water quality, and protect ecosystems and biodiversity.

Want to make your dollar go further? Green systems and materials reduce energy consumption, which in turn reduce your energy bills. They also increase asset value and profits and decrease marketing time; making your dollar go further for longer.

Want to live healthier? Green building isn't just good for the environment; it's also good for YOU. Sustainable design and technology enhance a resident's overall quality of life by improving air and water quality and reducing noise pollution. According to a 2006 study by the Center of the Built Environment, University of California, green office buildings improve productivity and employee satisfaction in the workplace.

Growing your own food is the best way to ensure a constant supply of fresh, healthy, natural, organic produce, and it is environmentally and pocketbook friendly at the same time.

Organic Produce and You

Organic produce means healthy produce, free of harmful pesticides. When you grow your own food using organic methods to control pests, you and your family know that the fruits and vegetables you are enjoying together are safe and free of chemicals that are harmful to both health and the environment.

You are also avoiding produce grown abroad, where loose regulations of dangerous chemicals mean that produce exported to the United States could be treated with compounds that have been banned in the US due to adverse health or environmental effects.

In addition, with organic standards unclear at best, you do not always know whether the produce you buy that is labeled organic really meets your own standards – so growing your own is the best way to make sure you are eating real, natural, organic produce.

Saving Money and Getting the Best

The price of organic produce can be quite high especially for more exotic greens and fruits. Growing your own is less expensive and also more convenient, as you no longer have to spend time searching for organic produce at your supermarket or looking for a store that specializes in organic fruits and vegetables.

It is possible to obtain seeds, seedlings and organic pest control and fertilizer products at very reasonable prices, or even to make your own organic fertilizer by composting kitchen waste.

Growing Your Own is Going Green

When you grow your own produce, you are nourishing the soil of your garden by planting species that enrich soil and by using fertilizers and other garden products that are of natural origin.

Unlike commercial farming which releases harmful chemicals into the air and water as well as the soil, organic gardening is sustainable and provides only environmental benefits.

You are also cutting down on use of imported and polluting oil, as rather than taking a long ride in your car to purchase organic produce from a remotely located farmer’s market, you are spending time and energy growing your own healthy food at home, and you are also getting the exercise, fresh air and other benefits for which organic gardening is famous.

If you’re concerned about effects then you’re probably already aware of the concept of food miles too. By growing your own food, you can avoid rely on produce that may otherwise be imported from many miles away.

That means that you can help to reduce the carbon emissions that are associated with air freight and other methods of transportation. Why do I want to build an Earthbag home?

Building with earthbags (sometimes called sandbags) is both old and new. Sandbags have long been used, particularly by the military for creating strong, protective barriers, or for flood control. The same reasons that make them useful for these applications carry over to creating housing: the walls are massive and substantial. The Earthbag house is constructed to withstand hundreds of years of weathering, just as ancient structures were built by indigenous peoples throughout history. This beautiful and easily attainable building material can be utilized by even the most untrained builders. Earthbag homes can be built by doing it yourself and avoiding contractor costs.

An Earthbag home is a house that can withstand bullets, floods, hurricanes, storms and fires much better than a conventional home. These homes can also be built for a fraction of the cost of a normal house and faster, meaning these homes has become the worst nightmare of the construction industry!

Why do I want to harvest rainwater?

Collecting rainwater is an age-old concept.

Rain water is a vastly under-used natural resource that we often take for granted. There are many reasons to collect rain from your roof. Because rain water is a naturally soft water devoid of chemicals such as chlorine. By harvesting rain, you will create a smaller impact on your municipal water source and reduce the amount of water you contribute to storm runoff. During the rainy months you can use the overflow on your rain barrel to divert water away from the storm system and into a permeable surface. Rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and deposition of rainwater for reuse on-site, rather than allowing it to run off. Rainwater can be collected from rivers or roofs, and in many places the water collected is redirected to a deep pit (well, shaft, or borehole), a reservoir with percolation, or collected from dew or fog with nets or other tools. Its uses include water for gardens, livestock, irrigation, domestic use with proper treatment, and indoor heating for houses etc. The harvested water can also be used as drinking water, longer-term storage and for other purposes such as groundwater recharge. The benefits of collecting rainwater are numerous. It reduces the demand on the municipal water supply. It allows for storage of seasonal rains for use in off-peak times. Harvesting systems reduce erosion, property flooding, and contamination by reducing the majority of runoff from businesses and homes. Reusing water also saves huge amounts of energy as around 45% of all energy use in urban areas is from water pumping and treatment.
