MY BECOMING A FASHION DESIGNER DREAM COMING TRUE STORY

They say if you have the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed. This has become something of my motto as I began working on my Fashion Design Course.

Success in fashion design does not come cheap. It requires painstaking attention to detail, patience, stamina, pure dedication, mastering of a high-level of craftsmanship with fabrics and still believing in my own creative potential to produce beautiful garments that reflect the needs, desires and the spirit of the times we live in.

After over 15 years as a young professional with a job and a regular income, it was not easy to make the transition from the world of work back to full time education. However my childhood dream, my vision, determination and passion within me were stronger than the fear of giving up my comfortable lifestyle and supporting myself. I knew it was not going to be easy, but I have dwelled on the final result of becoming a fashion designer, as that was the only way to get through.

Studying in a different country,  one of the most involved and demanding degree courses and competing with about a decade younger generation, has not always been straightforward. As a mature student I also had to be dealing with the pressures of everyday life, as well as the university pressures and doing it all singlehandedly and without the usual financial support of a mum and dad. And I can honestly say that it has been a rocky journey and one of the hardest things I have ever done.   About 10 out of 40 people who started my course even gave up and left. I believe this happened only because they stopped dreaming the dream and hesitated in bringing up courage within themselves to finish what they started.

Yet, I did also consider giving up the course at numerous occasions, sat in tears, not knowing how to carry on. I had to learn new technologies, computer programs and CAD with very little support, and to write essays in a second language, learn pattern cutting and producing garments, all of these after almost 15 years of my post-secondary education.   However most of the time I have figured it out and managed to get by.

Now I am almost at the end of what has been a long four years of full time study, with part time work to support myself financially.   Moreover I am grateful to all of you and especially to some special people in my life for their support and encouragement. Especially for their belief in my ability often justified just by few simple words on the other side of the phone.

You can visit my on line portfolio and see my previous projects: https://www.behance.net/Moneo

or you can follow my progeress on my FB Diary: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-last-5-months-of-my-degree-diary/577581272327937

Nonetheless, regardless of how hard it has all been, I have gained so much from my education and I hope to encourage everyone to achieve his or her dreams. No matter what age or at what stage in life, it is never too late. If you really want something and put your mind into it, you can achieve it. What you need is to have a dream.

After completing many projects over the years, my degree ends with a six-outfit Graduate Collection, which I am in the final process of at the moment. It has to be professionally made and showcased on a Degree catwalk Show by professional models in front of around two hundred people form the fashion industry.

(It is free and you are welcome to come. You can prebook your free tickets here: http://thedegreeshow.com)

Once I helped to raise money for a renovation of a local village hall by performing a 2 weeks trained dance routine with my dance partner in the front of about 500 people. I am still very proud of it as we helped to raise £1000.   If you would like to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKYtcGNB468

Now it is I, asking for help to realise my dream to finally come true. I would like to raise about £2000+  to cover the cost of fabrics, trimmings, materials, shoes, manufacturing of garments for my final graduation collection,  cost of the models for fittings and the catwalk show. Also the cost if the of the photographer, model and a studio for my Lookbook photshoot and my dad's visit to my show. I wanted to  involve him somehow to be part of this huge achivemnet, so he kindly hand made all my brand's labels, and somejewelry for my collection.

In return I wnat him to enjoy my show and his 2nd stay in London.

You can kindly help me  by sponsoring my campaign. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Hi Monika, it's been a privilege to read your story and see but a slice of the dedication you've poured into your dream. I'm a big fan of hard work, and you have that ethic in spades. I'm also a fan of witnessing the so called backstage processes of exactly what it takes in the quest to attain the final product. I have wanted to pay you a visit in the final stages of your degree, but my work has made things difficult. Best of luck with your endeavour. Looking forward to great things... Best wishes.
