Hello everyone! First and foremost, I would like to thank you for even taking the time to read this. My name is Thishalinni and I’m from Malaysia. I’m 20 years old and am planning to apply to Vet school this July 2018. Since my country does not have any private universities that offer this course and the government universities don’t really accept my Foundation in Science Certificate, I have no choice but to apply to the universities in Indonesia as it is the closest to my country and also the cheapest option I have.
Unfortunately, although it may be the cheapest option it is still however not so affordable for my family, given our condition. You see, the story goes like this. I have a younger brother who at the age of one had a growth called ‘Cavernous Angioma’ in his brain which ruptured and caused a blood clot. Due to this, he had to undergo a major brain surgery at such a tender age. This incident caused his brain development to be slow, limiting his speech and impairing movement on his left limbs. My parents had to use up all their savings and also sell our house in order to take him for traditional treatments in India as the conventional doctors told us there was nothing much they could to do about his condition. So in the hopes of making him normal again, they took several trips to India and eventually used up my study fund too. Sadly, he is now 9 years old but still behaves like he is 2. Due to this, my mother is the only one who is currently employed as my father had to quit his job to take care of my brother.
Anyway, back to my current situation. I have always been fascinated about animals since young and after graduating high school, I decided Vet school would be the best option for me. After finishing my foundation course last year, I applied for a Veterinary Degree program in Indonesia. I was offered a seat in one of the leading universities in the country. However, the fees came up to RM 120,000 (31,000 USD) for the whole duration of the course which we couldn’t afford. With a heavy heart, I had to let go of my seat even though we had already paid around RM 10,000 (2600 USD) as upfront payment. So, in the meantime I decided to work in a veterinary hospital to gain some experience. These few months of working with animals has made me realise that this is what I should be doing for the rest of my life; treating animals and taking care of the strays on the streets that need medical attention.
Coming July this year, I hope to pursue my ambition in another university in Indonesia. The total cost for the six-year course amounts to RM 100,000 (26,000 USD) but the initial payment in August is around RM 51,000 (13,000 USD). I am applying for study loans available in Malaysia but they do take time to be sanctioned and I’m not sure whether they will get approved. So, any amount you can spare for me will greatly help to fulfil my dreams of becoming a Veterinarian, and from then onwards dedicate my entire life in rescuing strays and abandoned animals. Thanking you in advance for your kind gesture.
