I'm Shaneen, 23 from the Philippines. My Dad has been on dialysis for 5 years now. To most doctors, this is a long enough time to live despite the condition.
The picture you see on this story is of us at the beach having a lovely time together. He loves going out to experience life whenever he can. Although he appears strong, he tells us he is tired.
His first death was 5 years ago. He fought hard to live. His second death was just last year, the first half of 2017. He fought harder this time, but it didn't make the pain any better. Seeing my mother by his side all the time makes it even harder. To lose someone you've lived with, laughed with, and loved for 30 years is difficult, heartbreaking. To see them live and be with you for longer is a joy.
2018 is a new year for all of us. To some of you, it's a happy new year. To some of us with families with living conditions that need assistance, it's just a new year. I'm writing this now with high hope in my heart that some of you can open your hearts and help fund my dad's kidney transplant. This is a miracle my family is praying for. To those who cannot give or will not, I ask for prayers that he may live longer. Thank you all.
