As many of you may or may not know, my brother Matt has a Brain Tumour which he was diagnosed with at the age of 22. He choose not to voice it as like many of us he is a proud young man who deals with his problems without having to tell the world. Initially my brother was told by a senior consultant who I will not name but let’s just say he’s a disgrace to say to a 22 year old young man “everyone knows there going to die, you just know how” and “we can only monitor it, you just have to deal with it”. In my eyes that was unnecessary and unforgiving. Like the fighter Matt is he dealt with the situation as much as he could, he continued to run his electrician business and raise Freddie his one year old son with his girlfriend Hollie who has stood by him through it all.

After a gruelling 18 months with numerous hospitalisations due to Matt’s health declining, we were finally able to get a second opinion and change to a different consultant in Oxford. All of a sudden things started to happen, they ran test on Matt’s oxygen levels while he slept and found out that he wakes up 11 times and hour due to a lack of oxygen getting to his brain meaning he hasn’t had a good night sleep in over two years. He is now on a waiting list for an oxygen tank to help him sleep. Double vision, nonstop headaches and serve bouts of sickness are just some of the things he has to deal with on a day to day basis and I’ve never heard him moan or complain once!

His new consultant offered him a biopsy, this is where they take a small part of the tumour for testing, he had the biopsy around a month ago and the results came back confirming the initial diagnosis. The biopsy took its toll on Matt and he currently cannot walk without support and struggles with the simple day to day things that we all take for granted. Matt is currently in hospital with a chest infection that nearly killed him because his immune system is currently so vulnerable. He’s now been offered radiotherapy but the risks that come with this are so high, as radiation would affect so much of his healthy brain tissue and there’s a strong chance it could make him severely worse.

So this brings me on to why I’m telling you my brother’s story today. We are going to start fund raising to get him a form of treatment they do not have in UK until 2017 called Proton brain therapy. There are clinics already in Prague or America that offer the treatment but it’s not cheap at all, im in discussion with clininc in praque and waiting on them to come back to me with a price, I know the america clinics price is £250,000.

Basically what happens is they shoot a single ray of radiation in to the area where the tumour is and get rid of as much of as possible. You have to fit a certain criteria to be eligible to have this as it is such an advance treatment. Matts tumour is inoperable and non-cancerous but because of the tumour's placement it is classed as cancerous so Matt deserves this treatment. He deserves to be able to bring up little Freddie, he deserves to live happily with Hollie and he deserves a future. We all know the world can be a cruel place.

I’m putting a team of people together to help me raise funds and if you would like to join us let me know! We currently signed up for a tough Mudder in October and will be doing numerous fundraising events over the next year. From marathons to pub crawls, you name it we will fund raise for it! The more people that get involved the better!! Please help me give my brother a chance, I don’t want you to just give me your money.. I want to earn it!
