Living on his last kidney: My Brother’s Kidney Transplant

Jem Mark, my brother, is living on his last kidney. As a child, Jem had to go under the knife to have one of his kidneys surgically removed. He has been thriving with only one kidney ever since. Now, his remaining kidney is tired. Jem is due for dialysis and is a candidate for kidney transplant. He's been brave for so long but this news breaks our hearts.

The cost of Kidney Transplant in the Philippines ranges from Php 1.5 Million to Php 2 Million (About $50,000) and post-transplant medication is about Php 60K per month. I am working double jobs to meet our needs but we are in a dire situation. My mother just last month had to be rushed to the hospital due to a stroke and now this....

Let me tell you more about the background story....

Recently, Jem was rushed to the hospital in Dagupan by his friend George on December 5. He has been vomiting weeks prior. Initial finding was dehydration.

After a series of tests, the attending physician said that Jem needed blood transfusion already and had to be endorsed to a Nephrologist.

We were able to find his Blood Type B+ from Red Cross Baguio. Thanks to our cousins Lei and Amy for traveling all the way from Baguio to bring the 4 units to the hospital.

After another series of tests, the thing that we most dread to hear was said: Chronic Kidney Disease.
