Hi....I'm Suzi, 68 yrs old, disabled & in need of a little help. After 31 years as a Registered Nurse/Respiratory Therapist I was forced to retire due to a bad fall 14 months ago followed by a car accident a week later. I sustained multiple injuries when I hit the concrete including traumatic brain injury, permanent damage to my left eye, broken ankle with torn ligaments, left knee MCL tear, as well as, medial & lateral meniscus tears, rotator cuff tear to my shoulder & a fracture of my front dental bridge. I had knee surgery in July & I am now scheduled for ankle surgery which will require screws and a plate. Shoulder surgery & eye surgeries are pending. The fracture to my bridge resulted in it literally falling out of my mouth as the anchoring teeth broke off at the gum line leaving as the only option, extraction of all my upper teeth & a denture. Major oral surgery performed by an incompetent oral surgeon destroyed my jaw bone during removal of multiple teeth rendering it impossible to build a functioning denture. Second opinions from two other oral surgeons concluded that since this was the 'maximum span' for an anterior bridge, the only option available to me are bone grafts & dental implants to which a denture would be attached. A canal cyst which formed after the initial extractions requires surgery with ~4 months healing prior to grafts & implants. Each of these procedures will require general anesthesia at a total cost quoted to me of $32,000-$40,000. I have already paid $11,237 for the failed dental care out of what little money I had saved from my mother's estate after her passing. Medicare will cover much of the ankle, shoulder & eye surgeries but will not cover any of the dental because it is considered 'cosmetic' as it is in the front of my mouth. It has now been 14 months since I have eaten anything that wasn't PUREED and if/when I am able to have these dental repairs, I must endure another year+ of pureed food. I dream of crunching into a crisp salad with fresh veggies or even lightly steamed fresh veggies or taking a bite out of a fresh peach, plum or pear.
I always lived an active life owning & riding horses...it was a great passion in my life until an extensive back surgery in 2008 at age 55 left me with 10 fused vertebra, 2 rods & 20 screws in my spine & 2 bolts in my pelvis. After a lengthy rehab, I returned to nursing part-time & began showing & grooming my dogs until my back would no longer tolerate the standing. Then for 2+ years I worked in the radiology department as an image scheduler where I was able to sit most of the time. However, the injuries incurred as a result of this recent fall forced me into full retirement/disability.
My family often chastised me for not asking for help. They're all gone now except for my son who, much to his chagrin, is unable to help me financially. Now I'm out of options & must turn to strangers for help. I am so very embarrassed to find myself in this position as I have always been very independent & in a position to help others throughout my Nursing career. Sadly, this is NOW my reality.
I will be incredibly grateful for any donations or even the sharing of my story/link with friends, family, church or gym groups, clubs or any organization you may belong to. I vow to PAY-IT-FORWARD with any funds I do not use to pay my medical/dental expenses to other fundraisers who have causes undoubtedly more deserving of donations than my own. I only hope through this venue that I will be able to have these surgeries, return as a productive member of the workforce & enjoy some semblance of normalcy in my life.
FROM MY HEART.......I THANK YOU!!.................................................Suzi
