Mustard Seed Film Festival, the first and only South Asian film festival in Philadelphia, is returning August 18th-20th, 2017 for three days of screenings and events. Featuring contemporary, socially engaged films by South Asian directors highlighting marginalized voices, the second annual festival will focus on themes salient to the South Asian citizen, immigrant, and diasporic experience.

Mustard Seed commands visibility of a vibrant and diverse South Asian cultural panorama and also offer alternative visions of South Asia and South Asian cinema by bringing together communities of various origins and identities, and promoting cross-cultural dialogue and exchange.

"This festival makes South Asian stories visible to a wider audience and brings our themes to the Philadelphia public," said Hariprasad Kowtha, one of the co-directors of the festival. “And I am most excited to hear the conversations that naturally happen after a screening lets out -- conversations that normalize South Asian stories and emotions, shattering the stereotypes I grew up hearing."

This year’s festival will include over 20 short and feature length films by filmmakers who trace their roots to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Trinidad, and other diasporic communities globally. Among the highlights will be an opening night celebration featuring Leena Manimekalai's documentary film Is it Too Much to Ask?, which chronicles the experiences of two single transgender women looking for an apartment in Chennai, as well as other short films and related performances.

Mustard Seed Film Festival is a labor of love. We have an all-volunteer staff and we work tirelessly to bring quality films to Philadelphia. Your donation will help us pay our artists and directors, secure our venues, and offer us the ability to increase our visibility within the Greater Philadelphia Community!

"Mustard Seed is one of the only South Asian Film Festivals that intentionally spotlights women and LGBTQ filmmakers."
