Filip Horvat

Hello everyone,

my name is Filip Horvat and I am media composer from Croatia. I want to share story about me and my path as being composer through past 5 years. I think, the best way to introduce myself is through my musical work and social media.

Here are the links where you can find some information about me and my work:

Story

I graduated Organ in 2017 and Applied Composition in 2019. Since 2017, when I started with composition more seriously, even as a student, I had to face with music challenges as wel as with many others like communicating with potential clients, organizing my personal time, templates and resources etc. The most challenging was - how to make valuable and high quality music for someone and at the same time have all components of final product legaly licensed.

Of course, that wasn't easy task then, as it isn't today also. At early stages I'v being asked to make original music for different projects such as scoring music for National Radio and Television (electronical composition Fire and similar), scoring music for short animated student movies, scoring classical music for live concerts (like: The Bug's life, Brass quintet, op. 5, Three Images for Symphony Orchestra) and so on.

Back then, it was easier, because Music Academy had all needed hardware, software and other gear licensed, so composer did not have to worry about using anything without permission or proper license.

Unfortunately, when I graduated applied composition (at the end of 2019), there was a pandemic of Covid - 19 following, that blocked most of things a bit. So, with such a situation, it wasn't most desirable start for young composer with some experience and without any funds. I had to start with various necessary softwares like: Sibelius, Cubase, Sample Libraries etc. from which most of were free or trial versions. Such versions, at least in Music bussines and Audio production, are less desirable and bring less audio quality, so at the very beginning, from a user or client perspective, they not sound very professionaly, even if the content maybe is. As you can conclude, I had to manage and work with what I had.

Whatever the situation was with covid, I started getting some first gigs from abroad, and first of them was Kapia video game, for which I scored some original music ( specifically, one level which I had to score with virtual Organ Samples). It was really challenging and great experience to work on a videogame, thanks to developers Anna Mimik Antonova and her husband Pavel. Soon after that, I get one short movie to score called Pas de Deux, with director Constantinos Christofi and his crew from Sheffield (England). This time, I was given to make the whole soundtrack for the movie, so it was even more challenging, because it was my first movie i worked on. I also participated in Film Music Competition Scorelief 2021 for which i rescored animated movie called Spring, which is available on my youtube channel.

Development

My career started with composing music for live concerts, but as my focus at the university was composing music for films, videogames and other media, later I specialized and dedicated myself more to this type of music. I had to learn many different things, from understanding and using new softwares like Cubase pro, Sibelius and other to improve my musical language through constant training in harmony, orchestration, music styles, applied aspects of composing and so on.

Needed funds for future projects

My goal is to continue composing music for my own projects, as well as for upcoming projects in the future, for which I will have to upgrade my current hardware which is outdated (my PC) and get licensed Virtual instruments, Cinematic Studio Series, Projects SAM, Performance Samples and software Dorico Pro 3.5 for music notation, which are high quality, but something between entry level and real PRO virtual samples. One of the future projects is JRPG videogame Eternal Anima - The Apollo Project by Stefano Ete, who gave me opportunity to score the whole soundtracks for the game.
