Help Wes Become a Teacher in NYC!

Update posted by Wes Nemenz On Jun 30, 2017

I'm officially hired - I'll be teaching this September at Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. Most of my classes will be co-taught, meaning I'll be providing specific English as a New Language instruction to English Language Learners in general education classes. This school seemed like a great fit from the start (tons of extracurriculars including Drama Club (!), a Queer-Straight Alliance, photography programs, sports, and more! They also have embedded professional development and support for new teachers, which makes it even more of a perfect fit.

I've been through two weeks of my training program, and the going is about to get even tougher. I'm going from 9am-7pm days to 7am-7pm days, including time spent training in summer school! I'm very excited (not really nervous, yet) and just ready to knock them out.

I had a realization that I could not have achieved this without the support you've all given me. I literally (that word gets overused, but I mean it) could not have done this without the generosity of my friends and family. I'm reflecting on how grateful it feels to have this support behind me and how much easier it makes me feel like I can achieve my goals. This has provided me with an excellent model of what community can do to make the dreams of one come true - an idea that I hope to integrate into the daily life of my classroom.

I want my future students to know that anything they dare to dream is achievable. The lesson is that it is only achievable if we have a community invested in our success - a community made up of kind, every day individuals like yourselves who offered assistance. I'm eternally grateful.

"When I dare to be powerful - to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid."

Audre Lorde

I've been thinking a lot about strength and community as a result of launching this fundraiser. Internally, I very much underestimated the power of the community of support and love that surrounds me - or, this particular endeavor of mine. Before I clicked "Launch," I was nervous and afraid not only of failing and being unable to do the program, but in how I will succeed as an educator myself.

What has been surprising about this isn't how nice it feels to be able to pay for my immediate needs thanks to the humbling generosity of others - I kind of expected that (though not on this scale!) What's surprised me most is how much everyone's support has quelled my own fears about my potential shortcomings as an educator.

In short, this community has made me feel strong in many ways. I can't think of a better way to enter this training.

Thank you.

My heart is so full of gratitude today. Without it being even one week, we've already reached 10% of my goal. This has real-life implications for me. Here is what I was able to do this week thanks to your support:

  • Registered for NY State's Educating All Students Exam
  • Registered for the GRE (Ahhhhhhhhhhh! - Just kidding, I'm studying my tookas off and I got this)
  • Ordered transcripts and immunization records
  • Covered rent for one of my 4 months without income! (This is a huge deal, and a huge relief)

This weekend, I'll be getting started on my first round of rewards. So, make sure you send me your mailing address if you haven't already and stay tuned.

Have a great weekend!
