It was one of those regular Sundays. But none of us could have prepared us for everything that happened that one Sunday, April 29, 2018.
Goldwyn "Yanyan" Gastador is a devoted, hardworking husband to my sister Babyrose and a doting father to my niece, Felicity Gwyn. He is a local from Daanbantayan and is a frequent face around town. Everyone knows Yanyan. When anyone needs a bit of fixing, from televisions to computers, he is the guy to trust. He is a jack of all trades and a master of generosity and friendship.
He was taking his time to dress up for church when he suddenly felt a bit of a headache. The headache turned nasty. My sister and their daughter could only cry out for help as Yanyan was literally punching his head. It was the type of headache we now know as "thunderclap headache".
He was brought to the local hospital. After the first aid treatment was administered, he was then transported to the city via an ambulance. During the painstaking trip, my sisters were battling between bringing him to a public hospital where he would have to wait for hours or getting him to a private institution where immediate attention will be given. We all knew that Yanyan's life was hanging by a very thin thread. He was already in a coma. All the hospitals with ICU units were contacted but only Chong Hua Mandaue had an available unit ready to receive us. We had to make the wisest decision to save Yanyan's life. He was brought to the emergency room of the Chong Hua Hospital in Mandaue City. The surgery was scheduled the same night. To this day, we are very thankful of the availability of a neurosurgeon when we needed it. Thank you, Dr. Briones, and all the staff at the operating room.
The surgery lasted about 3 hours. It was successful. The massive bleeding was removed. We later found it was a ruptured aneurysm. A ruptured aneurysm happens when blood is released into the space in the person's brain, and is often accompanied by a stroke. My brother in law, until now, is still in a comatose state. We are praying for a miracle. We are constantly praying for hope that he survives this.
We are reaching out for help. Please help us save Yanyan. We are as helpless as any unprepared, regular people. The bills are piling up by the thousands each minute. Hopeful as we are, we do not know yet when he is going to awaken from this deep sleep.
