My name is Suzie, a third year student at the University of Nairobi and I'm raising money to help my family get a home and have a new start in life.
Following the recent violence in some parts of our country, Kenya, our family was directly affected and displaced. If I talk specifically about Kawangware in Nairobi, the violence was so bad that if you were seen voting in 26th October, either your hand would be cut off or your fingers. As if that was not enough, any house or rather, any property that belonged to the Kikuyu and Kalenjin tribes burned down to ashes.
The only mistake my family committed was having been born Kikuyus. This saw our house burned to ashes and so was my parents business. Being a first born and having a sister in high school, another in primary school and a brother who is only 4 years old, I hope you can understand the urgency to see my family stop living in a tent. Maybe you are wondering, if my parents had a business, why is it that you can not be able to restart your life? To answer that, all of my parent's profits from their business was used to pay for my university fees. I can tell you first hand that my parents work so hard and are committed to see their children get the best education they can afford. Don't you think it's only fair I help them finding a good place to call home?
Using the money I'm raising from this site, I plan on buying a one accre piece of land in Central Province where 99% of the people there are Kikuyu's and chances of violence is very low, and then build a 4 bedroom house for them. I'm also hoping I get to relocate my family from a tent to a two bedroom apartment for 6 months in which the building of the house is done.
Having used all of my savings to do research that would enable a success to this fundraising instead of using the money to help my family, I really hope it's a success. According to the research I did, your money will be used as follows.
$22 000 - 1 accre piece of land
$36 000 - Building a 4 bedroom house
$10 000 - Furniture
$ 2 700 - Rent for a two bedroom apartment
$ 2 828 - Estimated GoGetFunding fees.
Total = $73 528
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT
Are you wondering why it is so important to me to raise such a big amount of money? Let me tell you why; Just like I said earlier, I'm the first born. Being the first born, I've seen it all. The sacrifices, the struggles, the hardwork and even the prayere that my parents pray for us, their children. My parents only sleep for 2 to 5 hours because they are always looking for jobs outside of their business. My dad owns 5 trousers, 5 shirts, 2 sweaters and 1 jacket and my mum owns 6 dresses, 2 skirts, 2 blouses, 2 sweaters and 1 jacket all of which were burned apart from what they were wearing and we have to wait on well wishers to give us clothes. My parents never eat lunch because they save the money they would have used to do something for their kids.
Even as we live in a tent, my parents are still looking for someone who would give them a job, and do you know what my mum keep asking my dad, 'If we find a job, are we going to pay school fees first or are we going to find a place to stay?' Tell me, is it so wrong if me to want to do anything I can for my parents and my family??
I hope you understand why it is so important for me to raise this money and in such a short time, just over a month.
As I close, I'm not only grateful that you have read my story so far, but I'm also thankful that you are considering to share and to donate to my fundraiser.
