Mosquito Lagoon Quarterly is a brand new startup Arts & Literature peer reviewed journal which is being produced by a group of writers and artists in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Mosquito Lagoon is named for an area of the river that runs between the mainland of New Smryna Beach and the ocean-side. It is also part of the Intercoastal waterway. It has a long and interesting history going back to some of the first sugar mills in the state of Florida.

While our initial intention was to promote only local artists and writers we have broadened our scope to include anyone with ties to Florida, and jokingly, I have said, if you have an Aunt with a condo in Florida, you qualify to contribute your art or literature.

We accept fine art, photography, creative writing in the following categories: short fiction and non-fiction, scholarly work (with citations only), original and translated poetry (the latter with the original poets written permission if still living), essays, historical narratives and much more.

There are strict guidelines for submission which can be found on our Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/MosquitoLagoonQuarterly/notes

The editorial staff is working on a volunteer nont-for-profit basis. So far, all expenditures have come out of our own pockets. We need approximately $1500.00 for the printing of the first issue of 200, 6X9, soft-cover, perfect bound (the type known in the industry as Trade Paperback, which is superior to Mass Market Paperback), with a full color cover UV coated and black and white inside material. Should we be sucessful in selling out our first run of 200 books at $15.00 each, we will be completely self-supporting and able to publish full-color insides to benefit the appreciation of our artists and photographers who work in color.

We are also attempting to secure non-profit status with the state of Florida, filing for 501(c)(e) status (e) is for the educational nature of our endeavor.

We are offering a pre-production single copy for a $20.00 donation which will include a limited edition 9X12 inch giclée print on acid-free paper of the cover art from the first issue, signed and dated by the artist in a limited edition of 100, suitable for framing.

I want to assure you that this journal/periodical will be of the highest quality. We have a great editorial board, headed by well known Florida writer Padgett Powell, who is Professor Emeritus of the creative writing program at UF. He and I have worked, and continue to work, together on projects, we have done so for going on 9 years.

Billie J. Maciunas is a poet in her own right and the author of a recent memoir, Eve of Fluxus, which recounts her marriage to George Maciunas, the father of the Fluxus Art Movement in 1960s NYC. This movement was largely ignored until recently when a retrospective and permanent collection was established at the Museum of Modern art in NYC. Dr. Maciunas holds a doctorate in comparative literature and is retired from the Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, where she was an editor.

Please consider making a donation, or better still, purchasing a pre-production copy with a free print of the full color cover.

Thank you,

Flora J. MacColl
