"James" has had a tough life so far and suffered a lot of trauma. His family was evacuated during Hurricane Katrina after they swam through the streets of downtown New Orleans and waited for days in the Convention Centre. When he came back home a couple of years later he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and was not sleeping or eating much. He got back into his old school and the one thing that brought him joy was playing viola in the school orchestra. He has been playing since he was about five years old.

Ever since he got kicked out of school for something pretty stupid he has been very depressed and stopped playing his viola.

When I mentioned to his mom that we would like to help him get into the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp, his mom’s eyes lit up.  The problem? It is going to cost $565.00 for three weeks including audition cost, registration fee, and tuition. (See a link here http://louisarmstrongjazzcamp.com/for-students/tuition-structurejazzcamp-fees/) We  are coordinating rides for him to get there every day, Monday through Friday from 9am – 3pm.  But his mom is a single working mom and cannot afford to pay for his tuition and the camp is not able to offer any more scholarships.

We need $265.00  by this Friday, June 22, 2012 and the remainder soon after.  The camp starts on July 2nd and runs through July 20th.

If you could give $5 or $10 to this effort it won’t take long before we can get him in.

Too many kids in New Orleans are getting pushed out of school for normal teenage behaviors, rather than receiving the education and care that they deserve and need, particularly when so many of the children in this city suffer from trauma, poverty, and violence in their communities. (See the accompanying video about the school to prison pipeline and what is happening in Florida, very similar to what is happening to kids in New Orleans.)

This cause isn't just about a jazz camp but showing a kid that he isn't just a throw-away... he is a child who needs music not punishment.

Thank you for your help.

Gratefully,

Anna

  • Wow you all have totally shocked me and made me and everyone else at Stand Up For Each Other's Day.. no week, no more than that! wow... thank you all so very very much! I have to admit we actually exceeded our goal with this site and our cash donations and with your permission we would like to use the extra funding to help other kids in similar situations - whether it is school supplies, transportation, or sponsoring a kid through the Roots of Music program here in New Orleans that helps middle school students pursue music and follow the cultural traditions of their elders in this beautiful place. Check out their link here: http://therootsofmusic.com/ I shared the news with "James"and his mom this morning and they are so excited! Tomorrow we will take him to his audition, go rent him a viola for the duration of the camp, and if he is ok with is I will upload a picture of him playing. :) Thank you all so much!
