Last week was one of the toughest times for me as I had to stop everything I was doing and travel to another province to assist my sister who had just given birth through C-section to my nephew baby Joshuel who unfortunately had to begin his life in the NICU(Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).

Joshuel was born perfectly fine and healthy but as we all know some Newborns cry a lot more when born and since they can't talk, we always assume one reason or the other for their cry and then try everything in our means to calm them down.

This wasn't different with Joshuel, seeing that he was crying a lot and his mother was still weak, numb from the Anaesthesia and just fresh out of the Theatre, his Dad assumed he was crying a lot because of hunger and therefore mixed a little formula milk and tried feeding him.

This worked as Joshuel finished 30mls of milk and immediately fell asleep. However, few minutes later during a routine check, nurse noticed his hands were turning blue and his breathing wasn't normal(he was making some whistling sound). He was rushed to the theatre to which later we were told that some of the milk he had taken had choked him and gone to his lungs.

He was having a cut off in oxygen and was suffocating. They were able to suck out most of the milk from his lungs but there after he was unable to breath on his own. He had to be put on Oxygen support and into Intensive Care.

Each day, we pay about 5.4usd per hour on oxygen use and equipment, which leads to a total of about 129.6usd on oxygen per day minus medication and ward bills. When ward and medication is included we pay about 240usd daily.

Baby Joshuel has been on oxygen support since Tuesday 8th last week. Oxygen support, medication, Ward and other hospital bills might rise beyond us but all these do not measure up to value of a human life.

As an aunt, I am not rich but I have a small stock of clay pots which I am putting up as exchange rewards for donations of 100usd and above in order to raise funds to support my nephew as he fights for his life.
