Help Boris and Yuma Make A New Start

SUMMARY: My friend Boris worked for years as a videographer for an international nonprofit organization. Now on his own, he needs help to buy his own equipment so that he can work in his field and support his wife and two small children.

You’ve heard the adage, “Teach a Man to Fish” and he’ll be able to provide for himself, right? My dear friends Boris and Yuma are skilled professionals who worked alongside me with an international nonprofit organization for 10 years. What adventures we have had!

• We have boarded hand carved canoes to visit remote tribes in Panama.
• We have slept in hammocks in the amazon jungle.
• We have spend LONG hours on buses, boats, trains, planes, vans and jeeps.
• We have gotten food poisoning.
• But most of all, together we told the stories of thousands of people in need.

Boris is a skilled videographer and video editor from Peru. He was fairly new to the craft in 2006 when he was hired by Maranatha Volunteers International to help capture video footage of their projects around the world.

“Working with Maranatha was a wonderful experience. The crew I worked with taught me a lot over the years,” says Boris. “Maranatha gifted me my profession, and I’m so grateful!”

A FAMILY IN SERVICE TO OTHERS

Soon after, Boris married sweet Yuma, a local young woman from Ecuador, and they began traveling together. Yuma learned photography, and was able to assist with lighting and sound on the shoots. Both are hard workers, and good people. They even uprooted and went to live in several different countries for months or years at a time to meet the needs of their employers and serve the Lord.

LOSING A JOB AND A LIVELIHOOD

When the organization moved focus to a different part of the world Boris and Yuma weren't able to stay on. Not only did they lose the paycheck, but they (of course) returned all the video equipment to the company. Without a professional grade video camera, microphones, batteries, etc, they can’t look for other opportunities to do the work they are so good at.

Boris knows how to “fish.” But he doesn’t have the tools to employ his trade. He hasn’t had work or a paycheck in seven months. Will you chip in to help Boris purchase the equipment he needs to get back to work?

“Here in Peru, if you don’t own a camera, you aren’t a videographer,” says Boris.

The last several months have been a struggle. Boris moved their family of four to Peru to live in his father’s humble home rent-free. Yuma applied for permission to work in Peru, but the process went on for months and she never got the paperwork. Yuma broke down in tears as her paperwork was rejected again and again.

The only way the family was able to earn any money in Peru is by hanging a cardboard sign in their window and offering to wash people’s clothes. They had a handful of laundry clients and that helped them pay for diapers and a few necessities for their children. But it wasn't a real answer for their future.

Boris and Yuma have two beautiful children: Julieta, 8 years old, is shy like her mother. It was quite difficult for her when the family suddenly moved away from all her friends, her school, and her aunts, uncles and grandma. Joaquin is 2 years old and he is the complete opposite. When scolded, he responds by singing!

After not many month in Peru without work, the family moved BACK to Ecuador. But

After paying her tuition, additional funds will be used to purchase equipment for the family to start their business up again. Boris is looking into working with local clients, as well as providing freelance services for international clients or other mission-oriented organizations.
