Miracles for Marivic: A fundraiser for life-extending medical support

We are the nieces, nephews, sisters and loved ones of dear Auntie Beck who is currently in hospital, fighting her way to eventual discharge and full at-home recovery. We appeal to your hearts and homes for support as she and our family surmount this inconceivable trial.

One word to describe Auntie Beck? “Selfless”. Throughout her life, she has dedicated her energy, love and care to helping her siblings raise their children, treating them as if they were her own. In our childhood, she was a stern discipliner, in our youth, a steadfast supporter. Auntie Beck celebrated our highs and stayed through sleepless nights with us during our lows. In recent years, she derived the most joy from seeing us have careers and families of our own.

Towards the end of May 2023, Auntie Beck contracted a suspected central nervous system (CNS) infection that rendered her incoherent and unable to control her movements. Initial diagnosis became difficult as she became uncooperative and this led to a point where she needed sedation for proper testing.

Auntie Beck was eventually admitted to the Infant Jesus Hospital in Manila on 9 June 2023. Her doctors decided that she needed to undergo a cranial CT scan and lumbar puncture to identify the source of the infection.

Unfortunately, while undergoing the CT scan on 10 June 2023, she had a hypersensitivity reaction to the contrast dye used for the procedure, which led to her cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed immediately, but Auntie Beck was revived only after approximately 10 minutes, during which time her brain sustained further oxygen loss. She was put on life support thereafter.

Oxygen loss to the brain for more than 5 minutes is often fatal, with survivors bound to experience long-term damage to neurological faculties.

Yet Auntie Beck is soldiering on. On 19 June 2023, she was taken off the medical ventilator and could finally breathe normally on her own. She is also able to slightly move her hands, arms and head, and occasionally, her lower extremities. She is still being fed via a nasogastric tube (NGT) and is unable to verbalize her aches, needs and wants. Auntie Beck is being treated in parallel for bacterial and viral infections to the brain and lungs.

It will be a long road to recovery and our family hopes against all hopes that we would not curtail support for Auntie Beck for lack of finances. We have yet to show Auntie Beck the full extent of our gratitude for all the years she dedicated to loving and caring for us.

In her 11 days (and counting) of hospital admission, the bill has already amounted to a total of PhP 891,073.80 (USD 15,976.95), not yet including professional fees for the doctors who are attending to her. Of this amount, PhP 599,318.60 (USD 10,745.78) corresponds to the cost of the medicines needed to sustain her treatment. With some of these meds requiring the completion of full 14- and 21-day cycles of treatment, it can be reasonably expected that the cost will also rise exponentially. (Please see below for an itemization of the most costly medicines.) Even after she is discharged from hospital, Auntie Beck will require further care and therapy to regain basic motor and brain functions, which will entail more costs.

Healthcare in the Philippines is terribly and frustratingly expensive, especially in complex cases like Auntie Beck’s. The complications for her case do not, as yet, allow for transfer to a government facility, nor continued at-home treatment. While some of us have some capacity to provide for aspects of her treatment, the rising costs thereof will result in our being unable to pay for anything else other than her support.

We humbly seek your support in helping our family get through this ordeal. Any amount will help coupled with prayers and messages of support for Auntie Beck. (She exhibits physical responses to voice messages from loved ones! <3) GoGetFunding allows donations in any currency, which we will receive in Philippine Pesos. We have also set up the following alternative channels, should these be more convenient:

  • BPI : 0849187937
  • BDO : 010240083342

Thank you very much for your love and support for us and our dear Auntie Beck.
