I started running in the summer of 2018, in the aftermath of an experience that left me feeling powerless and so crippled by anxiety I was unable to interact with even my family and close friends without a great deal of effort and pain. I had read several articles on exercise and mental health, and I thought I would give it a try (along with therapy and medication, running does not solve everything)!
In September 2018, I ran 10k for the first time, and I hope I never forget the sense of accomplishment I felt that day. I felt like I had control again, however fleeting. On that day, and many more in my ongoing recovery, running has been a gift for me. Running is an opportunity to momentarily clear my scrambled mind, and experience a sense of pride and accomplishment, invaluable feelings when for a long time I could only see myself as a sad and scared girl, wondering when I would feel “normal” again.
I am feeling a lot better, and I want to pay forward the gift running has given me. For my next 10k on April 26, I am raising money for Rethink.org and Summits4Hope.ch, specifically to help fund the charity’s efforts in Maputo, Mozambique. I very much hope you will join me in supporting these projects!
I will donate 30% of what I raise to Rethink, a UK-based charity whose vision is for equality, rights, fair treatment, and maximum quality of life for all those affected by mental illness, their carers, family and friends.
The other 70% will go to Swiss charity Summits4Hope, whose aim is to provide drinking water access, increased sanitary facilities, access to feminine care products, and hygiene training in Maputo, Mozambique. Last June, Summits4Hope leaders visited the 10 Janeiro school in Maputo and were deeply shocked. 3,000 children were sharing 1 tap, and there were NO working toilets. I want to help change that. I take for granted the 3 liters of tap water I drink a day, and I do not want to anymore.
Running makes me feel good, but now it is time to DO good. I hope you will help me. Thank you very much for your support!
Summits4Hope is the official charity partner of the Zurich Marathon (I am doing the 10k CityRun), and all administrative costs are paid by the charity’s founder.
GoGetFunding charges 4% of funds raised, but I will make that up to the charities as part of a personal donation.
