This is a personal fundraiser for infant formulae for babies in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is experiencing its worst economic crisis in history. It has now become a humanitarian crisis with many low-income families unable to feed their children. Due to sky-rocketing inflation, infant formulae has now become unaffordable to most.

I'm a mother from Sri Lanka with an 9-month old baby boy. Due to some birthing complications, I experienced difficulties when breastfeeding my baby after 1 month. As I wanted to help other mothers avoid what I experienced, I have been donating Baby milk powder to needy mothers for about 7 months now.

Pls read the next paragraph if you wouldn't mind getting to know my rather descriptive experience. If not, pls feel free to skip the next paragraph.

After 1 month, Baby was not receiving breastmilk even though I was trying to feed him round the clock. I also experienced engorgement of the breasts and spent nights at lactation centres, painfully trying to express the milk... As I was conditioned to believe that "breast-is-best", it was a tough decision to give my Baby formulae. One day it was clear that Baby was extremely hungry. He could not be pacified whatever we tried. (He had lost weight after 3 weeks, but the paediatrician had advised to see if there would be a weight gain that week before starting formulae.) When we rushed to the hospital after spending hours trying to feed him and pacify him to no avail, the doctor instructed us to supplement breastmilk with formulae three times a day. He told me "give him formulae and you sleep for 6 hours"! You can imagine the exhaustion of both me and my Baby (and my poor husband too!) We continued the mix of breast-milk and formulae and once I was rested and relaxed, it was easier to manage the breast-feeding in general. I'm glad I didn't give it up altogether.

BUT, this story is not about deciding which is best; "breast-is-best" or "fed-is-best". This story is about how helpless and distressed I felt when my Baby was crying in hunger and there was nothing I could do about it. I was fortunate to have received medical attention, guidance on shifting to formulae and most of all been able to afford the hefty price of infant formulae. I felt strongly for mothers who cannot, and I really wanted to help them.

Through my mid-wife, I was able to find two mothers from the local community who needed help to feed their little children. For about 6 months now, I have been donating Baby milk packs to them each month and I hope to continue to do so.

Meanwhile, the economic crisis hit us smack in the head and my heart breaks each time I think of the new price of infant formulae, (more than double what we initially paid), and all the mothers now unable to afford milk for their babies.

I thought of creating this platform to source funding from my friends overseas to support this endeavour that I started alone. The most serious issue of the crisis is lack of foreign reserves. Your dollar, pound or Euro will go further than ever before to support Sri Lankans, regardless of which cause you support. While giving milky-milk to a hungry little baby, you will also help to curtail the power-outages, shorten the fuel queues and stock up the essential medical supplies.

Right now, I give 2 packs each of milk every month to the needy mothers through the mid-wife at the local clinic. The last time I bought, Lactogrow 400g pack is Rs. 1400 each. Cow & Gate is Rs. 2500. Now there is an economic range of Cow & Gate which is Rs. 755. I started my donations with Cow & Gate. Shifted to Lactogrow when prices went up. From this month onwards, I will shift to Cow & Gate economic range as I want to help as many mothers and babies as possible...

Once you donate, I will purchase the required milk and distribute to needy mothers through the mid-wife through the local clinic. I hope to share this fundraiser among friends, and I can personally update you. Thank you.
