I am a midwifery student and in October 2015 I will be travelling to Kathmandu in Nepal to work in local clinics and hospitals. Did you know that Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world!
In order to help raise money for this elective I will be completing the London to Brighton bikeride in June! During my time, I will be exposed to unfamiliar environments and cultures within everyday practice of working in hospitals and clinics. During this elective I am hoping to meet some personal objectives such as, appreciating the influence of social and cultural factors in health and illness. I will be exposed to people who will be below the poverty line and therefore want to learn about how this affects a person’s health. Working in a different cultural environment will be invaluable to my professional development as it will give me the opportunity to appreciate differences first hand. Learning how to contend with challenging situations where there is a language barrier but still be able to put a woman at ease will be of benefit to me back home. Having the opportunity to experience midwifery in a completely different environment with new challenges will in its self be stimulating and instructive. I hope that I can take the skills which I have developed from the first two years of my course, put them into practice, develop them and grow as a midwife. I am raising money to help fund this elective, but most importantly the more money I raise will enable me to purchase much needed medical equipment for the midwifery department in Kathmandu.
Any donations would be greatly received. Thank you, Maddy x
