Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy

Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy (MBRC), was formed in 1987 to save the black rhino which is constantly slaughtered by cross border poachers, by moving them to a central location of the country. The area originally set up for this purpose was 63,000 ha which consisted of land belonging to 14 farms. The 14 farmers who gave up their land are governed by a constitution in which they agreed to stop agricultural activities, pulled down internal fences and stopped further construction of buildings. Through this constitution, they provide protection of the Black Rhino, wildlife habitat and other wild life species.

Over a period of 20 years, the Black Rhino produced 66 calves (34 females and 32 males.) To date the conservancy is home to various antelope including the Kudu, Eland, Impala, Bush Buck, Water Buck and large herbivores such as Black Rhino, Hippopotamus, Buffaloes, Zebra and Giraffe. Carnivores recorded in the conservancy include a pack of Wild Dogs, Leopards, Cheetah, Brown Hyena, Spotted Hyena; Caracal, serial and occasionally Lions.
