Michael Mennone Jr

Michael Mennone was born in New Haven, March 2 1928. Having an early interest in music, his journey began when his Uncle Rudy purchased him his 1st instrument. Self taught and determined, Michael worked his way to a scholarship at Yale University where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Music in 1955 becoming the university's 1st flute major. Michael soon became the principle flutist in orchestras across the state. In addition to his performing, Michael took on the role of teacher at several prestigious institutions such as the Hotchkiss School and Wesleyan University. Eventually, with the support of his wife, family and musical colleagues, Michael founded his own music school in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, where in collaboration with the New Haven Neighborhood Music School, he offered a musical summer program for particularly gifted children. His ties to the NMS continued when he accepted the role as the Chair of the Woodwind department.

Michael later went on to accept a position at Western Connecticut State Unversity teaching music history, conducting and flute instruction. After over 20 years with the University, Michael retired with the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus.

During his nearly 50 years of playing, Michael entertained and inspired countless people as a member of area symphonies. As an instructor, he inspired and guided the next generation of musicians through his ties to various area institutions.

In an effort to continue his legacy after his death and encourage others to find their musical path, the family is raising money to start a scholarship fund in Michael's name at the New Haven Neighorhood Music School. The goal is to raise $25,000 for an ongoing endowment fund at the school to benefit area children in pursuit of musical instruction.

The 1st donation to the fund will be from the family themselves when Michael's treasured flutes will handed over to the Neighborhood Music School. The proceeds from these flutes should garner a significant sum and will go directly towards the endowment fund.
This campaign aims to raise the additional funds needed to reach our goal of $25,000. That is the amount needed to establish an endowement fund at the Neighorhood Music School. Once the endowement is established, it lives on it perpetuity and the scholarship will remain for years and years to come. Our family cannot imagine a better gift to the community or a better way to honor Professor Mennone.

All donations are accepted and greatly appreciated regardless of size.
