Hola a todos!!!

Mi nombre es Juan Andrés Tobón Orrego y soy de Jardín, un pequeño pueblo en el Noroccidente de Colombia. Vengo de una pequeña familia en las montañas quien siempre han vivido en el campo.

Desde que era un niño pequeño he estado interesado en el aprendizaje, especialmente acerca de ciencias y literatura. Sin embargo, diría que mis materias favorita en la escuela fueron las ciencias sociales y política global. En mi paso por la escuela yo estaba envuelto en un proyecto que vela por crear pasión por el aprendizaje de ciencias y matemáticas a través de la medición de variables meteorológicas Todo comenzó en el sexto grado cuando observe a algunos de mis amigos hablando emocionados y apuntando hacia el cielo. Eso sirvió como catalizador de mi curiosidad y ganas de aprender. Después de algunos días, le pregunté a la profesora líder de que se trataba, ella me contó que era un proyecto escolar enfocado en el registro de datos atmosféricos para apoyar las investigaciones de la NASA a través de un programa de extensión en el globo. Este proyecto escolar se llama OTACA. El objetivo principal es crear entusiasmo por la educación y cerrar lo que los integrantes del proyecto llamamos "La brecha entre la escuela y la vida”. Al inicio no entendía cómo en una escuela rural sin muchos recursos podían hacer algo como eso, pero más tarde me integre y mi vida cambio como nunca.

Estar envuelto en este proyecto me ayudó a crecer en maneras que no puedo describir así como me animo a abrir los ojos al mundo y buscar oportunidades. Es por ello que termine aplicando al movimiento de los Colegios del Mundo Unido. Su misión es "Hacer de la educación una fuerza para unir a las personas, las naciones y las culturas por la paz y un futuro sostenible”. Después de atravesar varias examinaciones hechas por el comité nacional de UWC Colombia fui afortunado de ser admitido en la cohorte de UWC del 2020. Se me ofertó un lugar para atender el UWC Dilijan en la república de Armenia.

En agosto de 2018 empecé a atender esta escuela internacional en el corazón del cáucaso. Después de dos años no puedo describir cómo esta experiencia tan importante me cambio la vida. Conocí gente de alrededor de 80 países quienes abrieron el mundo para mi. Tuve la oportunidad de conocer sus experiencias, sus historias y eso me permitió crear amistades que me atrevo a decir que serán eternas e incondicionales. También aprendí sobre diferentes temas como migración, derechos humanos, literatura, ciencias, artes, asuntos globales, etc. Estas personas me mostraron el verdadero significado de la amistad. Estar en Armenia durante dos años me permitió aprender sobre una cultura diferente a la mía, sobre diferentes idiomas y estilos de vida. Estaré eternamente agradecido por los paisajes, los monasterios, la comida, la gente y todos los lugares que tuve la suerte de ver.

Después de dos años increíbles, recuerdos y personas inolvidables, es el momento de pasar a la siguiente etapa de mi vida, la universidad. Es por eso que después de un largo proceso de postulación a universidades en su mayoría en los EE. UU., Ingresé en la Universidad de Oklahoma. Se me otorgó una beca completa que cubrirá matrícula, vivienda, comida y seguro. Sin embargo, hay otras cosas que mi familia debe cubrir para lograr mi sueño de ir a OU este otoño. Estos costos incluyen boletos desde Colombia a EE. UU., tarifas de visa, así como otros costos implícitos detrás de la planificación de mi viaje y mi estadía allí. Por eso estoy apelando a la generosidad de las personas que me rodean. Idealmente, sería increíble tener al menos 3/4 de mi objetivo para ayudarme

Si decides contribuir y ayudarme a llegar a OU este otoño, estaré eternamente agradecido y prometo que pondré actualizaciones sobre cómo va mi viaje en la universidad. Si no puedes donar, también te agradecería mucho que pudieras compartir esta campaña. También prometo contarte mis aventuras en los próximos meses. De cualquier manera, quiero decir gracias de antemano.

ACTUALIZACIÓN (Mayo 21): He estado en contacto con un organización basada en los Estados Unidos que se ha enterado de mi recaudación y que a lo largo de los años ha apoyado procesos de educación en mi comunidad y otras comunidades. Su nombre es Smile Education Foundation (SEF), su misión es "Mejorar el desarrollo académico y humano de los niños desfavorecidos mediante la promoción y el apoyo de oportunidades de liderazgo". He aquí su generosa oferta que estoy seguro me ayudarán a lograr. En cuento mi recaudación llegue a 850 USD, ellos ofrecieron igualar esa misma con otros 850 USD, esto me ayudara sin duda a llegar a mi meta. Hola a todos!!!

My name is Juan Andrés Tobón Orrego, I'm from Jardín, a small town in North-western Colombia. I come from a small family in the mountains who have always lived in the countryside. Since I was a small kid I have been interested in learning, especially about sciences and literature. Although I would say my favorite subjects in middle school were social sciences and politics. During my journey in the school I was involved in a project that aims to create passion about learning maths and sciences through the measurement of weather variables. Everything started when I was in sixth grade and I observed some of my friends talking excitedly and pointing at the clouds. That served as a catalyst for my curiosity and eagerness to learn. After a few days, I asked one of my teachers what it was about. She told me that it was a school-based project focused on recording weather data to support NASA’s investigations through their extension program across the globe. The project’s name was OTACA. Their main purpose was generating enthusiasm for education and closing what we called “the gap between the classroom and real life”. In the beginning, I did not understand how in a rural school without resources they could do such a thing, but later I became engaged and my life would change forever.

Being involved in this project helped me to grow in ways that can not be described as well as encouraged me to open up my eyes to the world and seek for new opportunities. That is why I ended up applying to the movement United World Colleges. Its mission is to "make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future". After going through several assessments made by the national committee of UWC Colombia I was lucky to be admitted into the cohort of UWC of 2020. I was offered a place to attend UWC Dilijan in the republic of Armenia.

Starting in August 2018 I began attending this international school in the heart of the Caucasus. After two years I can not describe how life-changing and meaningful this experience became to me. I met people from around 80 countries who opened up the world to me. I got the opportunity to get to know their backgrounds, their stories, and that allowed me to create friendships that I dare to say will be everlasting and unconditional. Along with them, I learned about different subjects such as migration, human rights, literature, sciences, arts, global affairs, etc. They showed the true meaning of friendship. Being in Armenia during two years allowed me to learn about cultures different to mine, about different languages and life-styles. I will be eternally grateful about the landscapes, the monasteries, the food, the people and all the places that I was blessed to see. After two amazing years, unforgettable memories and people it was the moment to move on into the next stage of my life, university. That is why after a long process of applying to colleges mostly in the USA, I was admitted into the University of Oklahoma. I was granted a full scholarship that will cover tuition, housing, food, and insurance. However, there are other fees that need to be covered by my family in order to achieve my dream to go to OU this fall. Such fees include tickets from Colombia to the USA, visa fees as well as other costs implied behind planning my trip and my stay in the USA. That is why I am appealing to the generosity of the people around me. Ideally, it would be amazing to have at least 3/4 of my goal to help me.

If you decide to contribute and help me to get to OU this fall I would be eternally grateful and I promise I will keep you updated on how my journey in the university will go. If you are not able to donate I also would be extremely grateful if you could share this campaign. I also promise to tell you about my adventures in the upcoming months. Its name is Smile Education Foundation (SEF), its mission is "To enhance underprivileged children’s academic and human development by promoting and supporting leadership opportunities". This is their generous offer that I am sure you will help me to achieve. As soon as my fundraising recahes 850 USD, they offered to match that amount with another 850 USD, without any doubt this will help me to achieve my goal.
