Campaign Story
Hello everyone!
My name is Joel and I am currently studying a BSc (Hons) in Policing at university.
My lifelong goal has always been to join the Police.
I have Tourettes Syndrome, OCD and Depression. Because of this I have before been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act several times.
Many people say that this is a bad thing and that I should not be able to join the police as a result of it. I am determined to prove them wrong.
I don't see it as a bad thing at all. In fact I belive that my experiences of living with mental health issues and the Mental Health Act have given me an experience, and perspective, that not many police officers will have. 1 in 4 people will suffer from some form of mental health issues at some point and as a police officer, should i get in, it is almost unavoidable that I will have to deal with people suffering from a mental health issue at some point. I aim to become a Family Liason Officer and also want to work on Mental Health Response Cars. I have had officers dealing with me saying "I know how you feel" and i've thought "no, you really don't know how I feel". I feel that my experiences will allow me to really connect with people in crisis, because I understand what they are going through as I have been in that position myself, and help them. I will be able to listen and advise, talk them through everything that happens, use my past experiences to make them feel at ease.
Right now I need your help.
I am in need of help to fund my studies and complete my degree. Any amount you can give would be so very gratefully accepted and appreciated.
With thanks,
Joel
