This fundraiser is on behalf of Melissa Glen and her family.

While having been diagnosed with hypothyroidism at a young age and with Graves disease in 2003, Melissa was always up for a hike and general adventure. She enjoyed photographing, and being out in, nature (Photo from 2010). She was working hard in university and loved (and still loves) her cats.

Over time, Melissa got sicker and sicker and normal day to day things became more and more difficult. She was working in a job she really enjoyed, but it was quite physical and she was unable to carry on. She was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis in May 2016. It has proved very resistant to treatment, with many immunosuppressors being tried and she even had her thymus removed, which is a gland that plays a big part in the immune system. From this time, the medical bills have been piling up as there are many basic hospital procedures that are not covered by medical aid.

In February 2019, she was in ICU and nearly died from septicemia caused by intravenous therapies combined with her non existent immune system.

May 2021 she underwent a lumbar spinal fusion to address her vertebral discs collapsing as result of osteopenia.

From 2020, her doctors were looking into the possibility of her having a blood disorder such as thalassemia which require expensive genetic tests that are not covered by medical aid.

In 2022, they started looking at the possibility that she has polycythemia vera, which is a type of blood cancer that cause your body to produce too many red blood cells, causing it to get very thick increase the chances of having a stroke. Diagnosing this requires a bone marrow biopsy and the medical aid required a number of other diagnostic procedures prior to approving the bone marrow biopsy.

For the last few years it has been a vicious cycle of hospital admissions related to septic shock, medical tests that medical aid say they will cover and then don't. All of this combined with emergency costs such as vehicle breakdowns and flood damage to their house has made every day a struggle. They are an honorable and ethical family and always try and make sure their bills are paid but it is becoming impossible.

Her parents are elderly and retired and while she is on disability and trying to make greeting cards for some income, and they are struggling to make day-today ends meet, often going without food.

Any assistance to relieve some of the pressures on this family would be appreciated.

Some good and not so good news

Update posted by Tammilee Pike at 04:22 pm

Melissa had a series of rhizotimies to relieve the pain due to some collapsed discs. The procedure went well and Melissa reports being pain free. However, the extra stresses has triggered a myesthenia crisis and she was admitted to ICU yesterday. While she is not ventilated she is weak and

Haematology update: I definitively have haemochromatosis which has led to polycythemia but in not polycythemia vera. I'm not allowed to drink at all now. Not that I ever did much. Need my iron levels checked as often as medical aid will allow (every 2 years) but need my liver checked. . . . .

Wrist update: I have bad carpel tunnel in both wrists, with possible ulnar compression at either/both my left elbow and wrist. The surgeon, however, given my complex situation, doesn't want to rush to surgery, so I'm going to be trying splints for 3 months. This means possibly having 2 surgeries. . . . .

I reckon it's about time for another update! Sorry for delay in this one, I've been (wo)man down with yet another bladder infection with my local (un)friendly drug resistant bacteria. I didn't realise how bad of a thing it is that my bladder is too large/can over expand. When I. . . . .

So I'm sure a lot of people wonder what on earth I do all day!?Well I used to do a lot of knitting of blankets for charity. Specifically the Robinhood foundation. I design the blankets and then knit them, usually with older folk in mind. I then knit "scrap" blankets. . . . .
