Melchor’s Bold Battle

Melchor Villanueva, the father of our dear friend and colleague, Maybelle Villanueva, has been hospitalized for the second time this year due to several medical complications. Among his other health conditions, his leg infection has worsened the most in the past few months, leading to his recent admission. The doctor presented the Villanueva family with a choice between keeping his limb, which may not be restored to full functionality, or amputation.

His family pursued Debridement to clean off damaged tissues, and he underwent the operation last September 26 for almost 6 hours. However, after just a few hours, he bled, and the doctor recommended that they transfer him to the ICU. Even though it was a tough call, the family decided not to do so because the medical costs were already piling up. It has already hit them with an incomprehensible $10,000 at the very least.

The bill was already more than what their insurance and extra funds can cover. They were then forced to sign a waiver stating that they would not hold the facility and the practitioner liable in the event of any complications. For Melchor, the suffering had already become debilitating, reaching the point where he said he was already exhausted. As we were writing this, he needs six bags of blood, 3 of which are platelet concentrates.

Melchor is an amazing man and a noble father. Despite the challenges of this unfortunate circumstance, his family remains strong for his sake, especially amid the COVID-19 crisis, and we want to help them as much as we can.
