Meghan’s Birthday Wish!

Hi everyone!

Those of you who know me know that I am a BIG birthday person eagerly countdown to my own every year! I feel I get more excited the older I get!

This year, my birthday comes at a very different time though. A time where there is so much uncertainty, fear and desperation in the world. Although this can be said for people worldwide, I have noticed these emotions more in my home town and it's surrounding rural communities.

I have been so incredibly lucky to call Hoedspruit my home for the last 5 years. I have been even more fortunate to call Acornhoek (the rural community neighbouring Hoedspruit) my place of work for 4 of those years. During my time here, I have developed deep and long lasting relationships with patients, families, local NGO's, hospital and school staff members to name but a few. These relationships I treasure and carry with me wherever I go.

And so, I have decided to use my birthday this year to bring a little reprieve to some of these brave and resilient organizations and families that I have met along the way. I've decided to do this by attempting to raise enough money to provide 100 families with food parcels that will ensure an empty tummy is the least of their worries for a time.

I was recently introduced to an incredible man who grows his own vegetable gardens in Acornhoek. Although this is his livelihood, he has never hesitated to supply families in need with vegetables from his own gardens. He has become very involved in supplying local NGO's with fresh produce too. And so I thought he would be the perfect person to approach to help me make my birthday wish come true.

R150 makes up a parcel of fresh, locally grown vegetables that lasts a family of 4 a month! Not only does this parcel fill 4 tummies for a month, but it supports a wonderful man and his family too.

My goal is to raise enough money to hand over 100 food parcels to 100 families by the 6th of September - which is my birthday!

I know that this is merely a drop in the ocean and the uncertainty, fear and desperation reaches so much further than those 100 families. But to be able to bring kindness, joy and a little bit of certainty to those 100 families will be the best birthday present I could ever ask for!
