Hi every one!
He, the man in the pictures is Alvaro, but many people know his as "El Cos" (El Costeño), he is 36 years old. The woman next to him in the next picture it's me, Laura, Alvaro's life partner.
I meet Alvaro one night, about five years ago, and I remember been attracted to him for his sense of humor, kindness, happiness, intelligence and smile. That night he told me that he had studied Physics and I thought "That's awesome!" But he also told me that he hadn't finish his career. We became a couple and eventually he told me why he hadn't were able to finish his career. Turns out his family made some bad financial decisions and by his 5th semester they couldn't afford no longer his college. Nevertheless he didn't drop of college. He started preparing and selling coffee on foot around the university to collect money for his tuition fee.
Unfortunately, that wasn't enough because the fee was too expensive for him. He had to drop his studies and had to start working full time to support his family. That was 13 years ago. After that he tried to go back to college but it became more and more impossible: the only jobs he could get were poorly paid and very time demanding, his family split... He was on his own, with no money, with a divided family and just a few friends. He kept looking for a better job that allowed him to live and to pay college, only that he couldn't find one because he hasn't have a degree. It was a dead end for him: he wanted to study but he didn't had the support, the money, or the time to do it so, he focused on working for living and gave up his dream of study.
At that point a hard reality hit me: college is a luxury for most of us and I was incredibly blessed and lucky for having a family that supported me financially and emotionally to go to college.
After a while of been together we started to live together. I had took a job as a teacher in an Indigenous region of my country, with a salary enough for a couple to live. That was four years ago. Since then while I work he help me in any way he can (he works full time at home and tries to earn extra money with small jobs).
Recently he told me that he still wants to study and that he found an online technical career in a virtual university called Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia" that he is interested in. I decided to help him to make his dream come true. His best shot right now is that virtual program that takes 2 years to complete and it costs approximately $8000 USD. I did some math and I realize I can't help him all the way long with my salary: I’m not able to get a loan for that amount or to save that kind money in 2 years.
I sincerely thank you all for take the time to read Alvaro’s story. I hope that you could help Alvaro to finally make his dream come true. Right now he feels ashamed, he thinks that he is too old for study, and that there’s no hope for him, but I bet there is it. With your help I know he has a chance.
Thanks to all of you!
