“You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.”
- Winston Churchil
l

It always feels good to receive something from others, but I believe that at a certain point in life, everyone realizes how important it is to give back to others as well. It does not necessarily have to be material stuff. Usually, it is your time, care, and love others appreciate the most.

Last year I set up a goal. I decided to visit a different third world country every year and spend some time volunteering there. My first trip was to Zanzibar, Tanzania. I went there last August and stayed in Zanzibar for four weeks. I did medical volunteering in Mnazi Mmoja hospital. Having the opportunity to live like a local and help people in need was the best experience I have had so far.

I guess everyone has seen documentaries about starving children, poverty, and constant political wars of Africa. I was very grateful to have an opportunity to visit Tanzania and witness everything first hand. I am glad that the country's economy is on the rise and most people today are much happier than they were before. Unfortunately, more than fifty percent of all Tanzanians still live in a shadow.

I think what shocked me the most is that education in Tanzania is not free of charge and that parents need to pay money to let their children attend public schools. I spoke to many locals and realized how big of an issue this actually is. There was this one man in particular who has an eight-year-old daughter. The man comes from a very poor family. He hadn't had the opportunity to finish the school himself but he is trying his best to make sure his daughter does. He told me that he would starve for days to save up enough money to pay for his daughter's school fees. And this is just one example...

This year I am going to Nepal!

Nepal is one of the poorest and one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world. Due to its geographical location living there is a real challenge.

The only problem with volunteering abroad is that volunteers have to pay for the work they do. And when the living expenses, flight ticket prices, and project fees are all added up, we end up with quite an expensive trip. Especially having in mind the fact that volunteers spend most of their time helping the locals and contributing to the community.

The total cost of the Nepal volunteering program is 780 USD which is 684 EUR. The majority of the money goes to the local community as a charitable donation.

I am not writing all of this to ask for money. NO! I do not want to make you obliged to give me money for the trip. I am just trying to raise awareness about the problems that we sometimes do not know exist. I am trying to encourage others to join us in helping those in need. And I do understand that there are lots of people who do not have the time to go abroad and spend several weeks doing voluntary work. That is why, for those, I am offering a chance to contribute by donating some money. It would be really great if we could raise 500 EUR. This would make not only this trip but also other trips in the future possible.

P.S. I promise to send some photos from Nepal to every contributor! 😉
