Medical Internship in Iringa, Tanzania

Hello!

My name is Daniel Bernal I am a first year pre-medicine undergraduate student at the University of Florida. I decided to dual-major in Biology and Spanish for I wanted to partake in a challenging undergraduate career to demonstrate to medical schools that I am a well rounded, dedicated student that has what it takes to become a doctor. My love for biology stems from my high-school career in which I fell in love with the subject particularly our physiology portion of our biology class. My love for spanish comes from the fact that it is my first language and want to become a true bilingual speaker to be able to practice medicine in rural and underserved communities. 

Furthermore, I have also been a part of research at the University of Florida; I discovered a mycobacteriophage during my first semester at the university of level. I am currently matriculated in Phage Genomics; a class dedicated to finding genes in the mycobacteriophage I discovered. The project is part of Howard Hughes Medical Institute whose goals are to create a gene bank with discovered mycobacteriophages to engineer a mycobacteriophage that will be able to destroy tuberculosis causing agents. 

I am in search of funding to chase one of my biggest dreams, to participate in volunteer work / medical internship in Africa. I found Gap Medics early last year and it is all I have been able to think about. So much so that I have become founder and president of Gator Gap Medics, a club created to bring together students that share the same passion I do in order to participate in these projects abroad. 

I seek funding to participate in the Gap Medics program in May 2013; I will be going to Tanzania for 3 weeks. I am beyond excited for this event and any type of donation would be beyond appreciated. This internship will expose me to an experience far beyond what I could even dream of.
