I've known Ronnie for around 12 years already. I came to know him at church as we were part of the same bible study group. I'd say that he's one of my closest friends. He was always fun to be around with and shared the same passion for our Lord Jesus Christ. He would eventually become a mentor to many people as he followed the call to lead his own bible study group. As a professional, he was known as a very hard worker often working beyond regular working hours as an Import/Export professional.

Ronnie Mariano and Honey Caminero

It was around August 2019 when he started complaining of health issues. It was a variety of illness - a bad case of gastroenteritis, skin allergies, recurring fevers, on and off body weakness, etc. He was always in and out of the hospital for check-ups but was never really confined except for a serious bout with gastroenteritis in September. At this point, he had lost a lot of weight already. When I met him for lunch in November, I was shocked to see him so thin. We thought that the loss of weight was due to the stomach virus and that he'll gain it back again in time.

Not long after, he again had to be rushed to the hospital for a high fever. This time he transferred to St. Luke's QC for second opinion where it was found that his lungs already have several mass, a number of which are quite prominent in size. He then underwent a number of tests for TB. All of which yielded a negative result (which was confusing). To make matters worse, he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in November. The doctor wanted to perform a biopsy on his lung mass but it was deemed too risky. Still he was started off on a treatment.

At this point, he had already lost a lot of weight and was very frail. In our visits, he could hardly move without losing his breath. I have to admit that I felt he didn't have long to live considering his gaunt appearance and the somewhat suspicious nature of his illness. We prayed earnestly that he would be healed.

He did made some progress. By end of January 2020, the mass on his lungs have decreased in size and his sugar was under control. We were optimistic. After months of not working, he was able to finally get back to work in February (with some time restrictions). However, he would still experience unexplainable fever which would cause him to miss work. He's appearance was still alarmingly thin.

Then March happened. In the first week of March, he started to once again experience weakness and very high fever (40deg). Then on March 9, he decided to go to St. Luke's QC as he was already having difficulty breathing. He was admitted on the same day. It was found that he had Community Acquired Pneumonia thus he was suspected to have COVID-19. He was tested immediately and the results came only after two weeks. The first test result was inconclusive thus he was tested again. This time the results came faster (5 days) and it came back negative. Praise God! By this time, he was already weaned from oxygen and was well enough to be discharged. He was discharged on March 30 - a total of 21 days in confinement.

The final diagnosis is Pneumonia in the Immunocompromised Host Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

All-in-all, his medical bills amounted to Php533,748.38. Since he wasn't been able to work lately and will not be able to do so, we'd like to ask for your help in raising the said amount. As of today, we've already raised Php272,500 from his friends from office and church. We're still aiming to raise Php300,000 to cover for the remaining amount and to help him continue his treatment.
