I am a fourth year medical student studying at the University of Sheffield medical school.

As part of our course in the fourth year we are given the opportunity to do a placement abroad. Throughout the course we do many placements in varying locations and specialties in the UK. The elective period of seven weeks abroad allows me to gain experience in medical practices somewhere else in the world. It provides a valuable learning experience, getting hands on with tasks and helping people who have less access to medical care than we do in the UK.

I am planning on going to the Delhi area of India on a medical program for seven weeks, the program includes time with specialties such as Paediatrics and Oncology which are both areas that I am keen to pursue as further career options. The main hospital that I shall be based at is a charitable hospital.  There is also a slum outreach campaign to help provide healthcare to those with the least access to it and poor education; in the long run the aim is to be able to set up permanent free healthcare for those who need it most.
