Medical costs to help beat Craig’s Cancer

Update posted by Chantal Volker On Sep 07, 2017

As I sit down to write what I have to; I find tears yet again welling up in my eyes, which has been a reoccurring emotion of mine since opening the results this past Thursday of Craig’s latest CT scan.

While one always tries to keep a positive mind-set and to remain optimistic, the fact of the matter is we are dealing with a difficult and aggressive disease.

The scan revealed lesions on both cerebral hemispheres of Craig’s brain with features consistent with melanoma metastatic disease. Craig will begin 3 weeks of radiation to his brain starting from next week. The tumour in Craig’s liver has remained at a size of 7.2cms which therefore shows there is some disease control.

Craig is feeling good except for an increase in fatigue especially towards the afternoon which is very frustrating for him as he finds himself having to take naps once home. This in turn takes time away from spending quality time with Tyson, Thea and myself which is very unfortunate.

Since finding out the news that the cancer has spread, we have been researching as much as possible and have joined various support groups on Facebook interacting with people within SA and internationally relating specifically to Melanoma. It has been a real eye opener interacting with people in the same situation, but yet has provided us with so much inspiration and hope that this disease in some cases can be conquered.

Craig is currently on the following medication as well as sticking to a strict vegetarian diet of predominantly fruit and veg following Gerson Therapy.

ZELBORAF is a prescription medicine used to treat a type of skin cancer called melanoma that has spread to other parts of the body or cannot be removed by surgery and has a certain type of abnormal BRAF gene.

COBIMETINUB is a targeted therapy and used in conjunction with Zelboraf for patients with BRAF positive gene and has helped people with advanced Melanoma live significantly longer without their disease worsening.

We are currently waiting on our medical aid to approve the next 3 month cycle of Zelboraf as his first quarter finishes on Tuesday. This medication is what keeps Craig going and keeps the cancer symptoms under control allowing him to lead as normal life as possible. To put things in perspective we initially waited close to 7 weeks for it to be approved thus putting Craig’s health on a decline which resulted in him having to be admitted to hospital for a few days. It is a highly expensive treatment coming in at just over R93 000.00 a month with a shortfall of close to R18 200.00 per month. We have been fortunate enough that we have not incurred the shortfall as yet but our Oncology fund is now exhausted therefore we are unsure in the months to come.

In stating the above we have been extremely fortunate that friends and family near and far have started to contribute towards Craig’s campaign and it has helped tremendously towards the shortfalls on the various medical bills that are starting to increase.

We will be pushing forward to continue to raise as much funds as possible and will be posting various fundraising initiatives over the next few months and would greatly appreciate the publics support in any way. The first step is to create as much awareness as possible and to get our page – Help Craig BEAT Cancer, to be seen and liked by as many members of the public as possible. Therefore every share of our page backed up by a personal message promoting to LIKE our page can go a long way in increasing visibility.

It has been a tough and very emotional journey so far and the end is not yet in sight. Our Oncologist has advised that the next 3 months are the most crucial to know where we are realistically headed.

Craig is focused and determined to BEAT this disease by doing everything possible within reason to keep our family together into the future. Sending love and thanks to all those supporting us in various ways from donations through to meals, emotional and physical support, we appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts xxx
