This young Rottweiller was found in a desperate state outside the dog pound last week and rushed to a vet for examination. The results were grim - Leishmania, severe arthritis, joint capsule sclerosis, femoral head lytic leasions, hip dysplasia both hips. The volunteers appealed for help for this dog, or he would surely lose his life in the dog pound. I was contacted by a rescuer who asked if there was any way I could take him. Knowing that the odds were stacked heavily against this dog, I agreed to take him into our care to see if we could help him.
MAGNUS arrived today, and we took him directly to see our surgeon. Preliminary examination showed that this dog also has a significant neurological issue and possible spinal haematoma, plus suspected eye disease. AND on top of it all there is awful diarrhea!
We began his treatments and nursing immediately. Milteforan for leishmania, eye treatments, diarrhea tablets, special grain free diet, electroltyes, rest. Next week he will see the surgeon again, plus an eye specialist. He will be scheduled for an MRI scan as soon as his bowel problems are resolved. He is on cage rest with gentle short walks and lots of cuddles - which he loves!
We need help if we are to deliver the medical and surgical treatment MAGNUS needs. MAGNUS is large build and significantly underweight at 33kgs. He is a polite, friendly and loving dog, who appreciates every kindness shown to him. Neither the experts nor any of us can predict the outcome for him - there is a chance that he will be consumed by his illness and there is a chance that he will overcome it all. As a priority we will fight to control his Leishmaniasis, save his sight, and build his immunity. If he responds well, the future will mean hip replacement surgery for him and many months of rehabilitation. Every medical and surgical procedure he requires is now available in Cyprus, and we will do our best to meet his needs. We need your help!
