Medical Costs For a sick Stray Dog-LUMI

Lumi is a dear little dog. She's a Kokoni which is a breed of small domestic dogs in Greece. That means that you would expect to see a dog like Lumi living with a loving family. Indeed, she is most affectionate and loves nothing more then a cuddle and a kiss.

Instead Lumi was found barely surviving in a wasteland area on the outskirts of Giannitsa in Northern Greece. By then she was in a visibly sorry state: starving and pregnant.

We took Lumi to a vet as we thought to neuter her so as to give her a chance of survival but blood tests showed that poor Lumi also has Leishmania and heartworm. Leishmania is an endemic disease in Greece that many animals eventually die from. Indeed, Lumi's kidney's were just starting to fail.

The vet suggested that the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep. If we neutered her and released her as planned, she would just have an agonizing death.

But we looked into Lumi's trusting eyes. She wagged her tail and rolled over for a belly rub.

We just couldn't do it.

We made the monumental decision to try to save Lumi and we asked the vet to neuter Lumi instead. It was risky with all her illnesses but we could not afford to care for Lumi and a litter of puppies as well. Lumi suffered a loss of blood and her hematocrits plunged dangerously. But she survived.

Lumi is a fighter!

Now we need to find a safe place for Lumi to be treated AND to also purchase the medications for her treatment. She would need constant medical supervision and blood tests to evaluate her condition. She will probably have to be kenneled unless a miracle happens and we find a foster home for her. Her treatment will take at least 10 months.

Sofia and I are both temporary school teachers with very modest salaries. Our contract ends at the end of June and until the new school year starts we don't get paid, nor do we have the guarantee of more work. We simply can't afford it all. We have already spent 242 euros of our own funds on Lumi to date.

That is why we are appealing to YOU for help.

Lumi is just another abandoned dog like so many others but somehow she has touched our hearts with her courage in the face of great adversity and her never-ending trust.

Milteforan to treat Leishmania: 100 euros

Blood tests and biochemicals to monitor her condition: 180 euros

Renal support food for 10 months: 200 euros

Kennel fees for 10 months: 500 euros
