My name is Caro Wacuka Kingori 19 years, a medical student at The University of Nairobi undertaking a Bachelors Degree in Medicine and Surgery. I am the third born in a family of four kids. My dad who is the only breadwinner of our family was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in June 2017.The illness prompted him to quit his job where he worked as an engineer at Nestle Foods Kenya Limited . In August 2017,he started to go through sessions of chemotherapy and radiotherapy at The Nairobi Hospital which contributed largely to the depletion of his medical insurance cover.

In January 2018, doctors advised him to go through surgery to get rid of the cancer. In February 2018, he went through laparoscopic surgery that left him with an ileostomy. The medical bill at this time was 20000$. The ileostomy demands use of ileostomy bags that are scarce in Kenya hence making them expensive. On average he used around 3 in a day and each costs 7$.In May 2018,he underwent a minor surgery to put a chemotherapy pot on his body a surgery that cost 1000$.He continued to attend chemotherapy sessions twice in each month for 4 months each session costing approximately 200$.

In October 2018,He developed a stricture in his colon and it prompted an emergency laparoscopic surgery at MP Shah Hospital. This time the medical bill was 15000$.He then continued to regularly go for check ups that included procedures such as colonoscopy and imaging procedures like MRI ,x-rays and CT scans. Procedures that are quite expensive in Kenya.

In March 2019,he underwent an ileostomy reversal surgery and he responded well until early-May 2019 where he developed emergency complications that have put him under the doctors’ care while still in hospital.

In his condition, and being the breadwinner ,our family is experiencing financial constraints as a result. I enrolled as a self-sponsored medical student in April 2017 before his diagnosis and because of his medical condition my education is also being strained .My elder siblings are working but are not in stable conditions to fend for themselves and us too and my younger sibling is in school too. My mum stays at home too to take care of our ailing dad.

I am therefore appealing to well-wishers out there to kindly assist me and my family get through this difficult situationand help us restore the health of our dad.
