Medical Assistance for Single Mother’s Thyroid Problem

I am Grace, a 38-year old mother of one boy, aged 8. My thyroid problem was diagnosed during one blood test when I became pregnant in 2012. It was found that I have an under-active thyroid back then, but upon giving birth my thyroid hormones went erratic. One moment under-active, hyperactive the next.

It runs in my mom’s side of the family, and so it was not a surprise that I have it. Last treatment that I underwent was 2013, but after giving birth via CS I never went back to my Endocrinologist due to economic reasons.

An ultrasound requested by my Endocrinologist in Calamba Medical Center showed that I have 3 lumps developing around my thyroid area. I was advised to medicate if not undergo surgery entirely. I was endorsed by my OB-Gyne to a surgeon in Calamba Doctors Hospital to further check if my lumps needed immediate action. Indeed they did. Unfortunately, the time I was diagnosed of having these lumps and was advised to act immediately was the last time I went to doctors. I find it more important to work and fend for my son instead. No medications, no visits to the doctor. Nothing.

Now I have to make some time to prioritize my health as I am constantly feeling all the effects of neglecting this illness for the longest time. Almost a decade of neglect.

Being an unmarried mother who supports my son almost single-handedly, I find it hard to prioritize my health now especially at this time of pandemic. My salary as a Sales Supervisor is just enough to sustain my son’s needs especially that he is studying already since 2017. Mom is also battling the same disease, a widow since 2005. A part of my salary goes to the home needs, to help my Mom. My medical needs, sadly, comes last. That is why I am reaching out to the kindness of everyone with a good heart. Please help me get better.
