Hello! I am Maurice Joseph M. Almadrones. I am 30 years old, an only child, a fresh graduate and currently working in a humble aide post in the Philippine government. I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia back in 2019 and has been fighting to survive and stay healthy ever since. This is my 3rd year battling CML.

I started this fundraising to reach out to everyone with a kind heart to help me with my medical expenses such as my daily chemo maintenance medication and bi-annual BCR-ABL blood exams which unfortunately my mom and I cannot always fill in. You see, my mother is a retired senior citizen who has trouble making ends meet because we have debts to pay which were from when my dad got really sick and had to have hemodialysis for six years before he passed away. Back then I was still studying and was struggling with depression so I really took my time and fought my way to graduation despite these problems.

In June 2019, after a series of consultations and tests I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia and has been undergoing treatment through maintenance drugs (TKIs) and occasional BCR-ABL blood tests which try to see how my response is with the treatment and how much of the cancer I have in my blood. My initial BCR-ABL result was around 90+% which means that most of my blood contained cancerous mutations. To date I am now around 0.0030% (a slight increase from my previous results but doctors say I am still good). BCR-ABL costs around Php 13,000-15,000 ($268) in the National Kidney Transplant Institute in Metro Manila which I visit every 6 months.

My goal is to gain more zeros in my next BCR-ABL tests so I can hopefully reach remission.

Right now, my life is really being extended by my maintenance medicine which is Nilotinib (Tasigna) which costs around Php 16,170 monthly (around $310). Meanwhile I only earn around Php 13,000 ($250.00) monthly which goes to our household needs and daily expenses.

I try my best to apply for financial assistance from government offices but often processing overwhelmingly stressful and slow that no matter how early I submit my requirements, I would still end up shelling out money that I don't have so I would not need to skip a dose. (As of this writing, the Office of the President which is where I usually apply for assistance has made it harder to apply for assistance, which unfortunately prevents many patients from accessing their medicines). I live 200+ kilometers from Manila where most offices that provide assistance are located, and yet most of them are also often inaccessible and will take a lot of effort, time, and money to go to, all of which I do not have much of. So I really needed to set up a crowdfunding account to ask anyone kind enough for help in order to remain healthy and alive.

I have hardly any savings and I believe that it will also be used up if I fail to raise money for my medical treatment given these situations when government red tape makes things hard and complicated. My savings was meant for house repairs and to start a small business.

Thanks to everyone-- family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers who have given help all these years, I am slowly recovering and keeping healthy for all of you. I thank God for helping me come across all you wonderful people and for sustaining me since the beginning.

My doctor says that I have more healing and treatment to do but she is also hopeful that with continued maintenance and tests I may be able to undergo treatment-free remission in a year or two. Together with financial support I hope to achieve this remission soon.

I know some of my relatives won't be happy with me asking strangers for help, but I would rather do it than just sit and wait.

Now I am once more knocking on your hearts and putting my pride away in hope that you could help me ease my very heavy burden because I really really want to get well and live a normal life. I want to get into sports, I want to help myself improve and dream again, I want to pay it forward to my mom and my family, I want my mental health to recover from all this stress, I want to have a better and healthier future and make a change in the world.

Please help me and accompany me as I survive, heal, and fulfill my dreams.

Good News and Bad News

Update posted by Maurice Joseph Almadrones at 02:31 am

Good news: My check-up last June 2023 gave me hope for treatment-free remission since my BCR-ABL tests were getting better every time. My new doctor said she is looking at the chance that we could try stopping my maintenance medicine and have the option of monitoring every quarter through BCR-ABL.Bad. . . . .
