MARVEL is one of a handful of classic, antique Cape Cod Catboats and only one of two D-Class racing boats still afloat. Built by the legendary Herbert F. Crosby in 1904, she last sailed ten years ago (2010) and is in serious need of repairs. Restoration was begun by her former owners but conditions have forced them to halt the effort. They have elected to donate the boat to RESTORE MARVEL, a grass-roots project focused on completing the restoration with funds raised in this campaign. John Conway, a member of the Board of Directors of the Catboat Association, will oversee the operation. Conway is well respected for his restoration of the 1908 Charles Crosby catboat, BUCKRAMMER, and for his popular books CATBOAT SUMMERS and BUCKRAMMER'S TALES. When she returns to the water in 2021, MARVEL will find a permanent home at historic Westport Point, MA.

Update: Thanks to the generous support of donors and wooden boat-savvy volunteers, MARVEL's rebirth has progressed significantly over the past three months. 80% of her failed fasteners have been removed and replaced as have a number of her ribs and deteriorated hull planks. She now sports a new transom. The starter motor, alternator, fuel system and cooling system of her 1976 vintage diesel have been restored and updated. Work has begun on renewing her canvas cabin top. Her spars and mast are in process of being repaired and varnished.

Much work remains, however, including sail repair, replacement of her running rigging, fabrication of a new centerboard, repair to portions of her cockpit deck, upgrade to her electrical systems, refastening below the waterline, caulking and painting. We will also need funding for insurance and winter storage. So keep those donations flowing. The generous donation of volunteer skills means that virtually all of of the funds raised will be applied to materials and equipment.

Please feel free to pay her a visit at any time. She is now located behind Building #7 in the F.L Tripp & Sons boatyard in Westport, Massachusetts. Breaking News: A ten-part series on RESTORE MARVEL tracing the boat's history and the restoration techniques employed will appear in the monthly magazine Messing About in Boats beginning with the August 2020 issue.

Note: The MARVEL team extends sincere thanks to SILENT MAID for their independent contribution of $2,500 and to Judy and Ned Lund for their independent contribution of $100. These two donations now bring the Restore MARVEL fund-raise total to $5,645.00.

Winter 2022 Project Update

Update posted by John Conway at 06:52 pm

Happy New Year! Many of our supporters have wondered if the Olde Girl has weathered the January Blizzard of 2022 and the following week’s ice storm here in Westport, Massachusetts.. Good news is that, at least thus far, MARVEL has weathered the winter storms without any apparent damage. Before covering. . . . .
