Martyn Training Teachers in Sierra Leone

In July 2017 I will be returning to Sierra Leone to support Street Child's teacher training work. Sierra Leone is an amazing country and it was wonderful last time I was there to see how thoughtful, self-reliant and resilient the people are. It is also one of the world's poorest countries, having been through a brutal civil war and - having just risen to have the world's second fasting growing economy - the misery of the ebola epidemic.

Despite the huge efforts of the people of Sierra Leone, Education is, of course, in a fairly parlous state and the well-meaning teachers are often doing their best despite their own lack of formal education. Last time I visited, I helped run a series of teacher training workshops and it was inspiring to see both the gratitude and the enthusiasm of the teachers, and to perceive a real change in the teachers' understanding of how to help their students learn.

This time I will be spending three weeks working alongside Street Child's Director Of Learning, Maxim, and Port Loko Distance Teaching College to create a 3 day teacher training programme for Street Child's Teaching Specialists. These Teaching Specialists will then be able to pass this on to a large number of local teachers and so increase the impact of the small contribution I am able to make.

I am sadly not in a position to meet all of the costs of the trip alone, and so I am asking for whatever support you can provide to help get me to Sierra Leone. I have put a target of £1000 as a rough estimate, and will update this page with itemised costs of an expenses so the whole process is completely transparent.
